TWO BODIES ARE FOUND IN TWO WELLS, BUT WILL THE BODIES OF EVIDENCE PROVE MURDER? -- "48 HOURS MYSTERY," SATURDAY, MARCH 5

Criminal investigator Clay Bryant, also known as "Cold Case Clay," earned his nickname from the LaGrange, Ga. district attorney's office. When 48 HOURS MYSTERY caught up with Bryant, he was working on two separate and unsolved murders with some strange similarities -- both bodies had been found in wells. Correspondent Susan Spencer reports for 48 HOURS MYSTERY: "Secrets of the Well," to be broadcast Saturday, March 5 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

The death of Gwendolyn Moore, a 30-year-old mother of four, had haunted Bryant since he was a teenager. His father was the police chief in Hogansville, Ga., and Clay was at his side when Moore's body was pulled out of a well in August 1970. Gwendolyn's husband, Marshall, immediately came under suspicion. According to family members, there had been years of abuse.

But Moore, who passed a lie detector test, was not thoroughly investigated at the time, says Bryant, because of his alleged connections to the local police department. It would take more than 30 years and a lot of digging for Bryant to have enough evidence to charge Moore with the murder of his wife. Today, Moore denies any involvement in Gwendolyn's death and says he will plead not guilty at his upcoming trial.

Bryant's success in the Moore case prompted another family to seek his help in the 1987 disappearance of Fred Wilkerson. A small town fire chief and 49-year-old father, Wilkerson seemingly vanished. Bryant started piecing together the puzzle and determined that the prime suspect was Wilkerson's ex-lover, Connie Queedans. At the time of the disappearance, the estranged couple was in a property dispute. Bryant follows the clues, and once again it leads him to some familiar territory: a well and another "body of evidence." Wilkerson's body was found in Queedans' well, she would have to stand trial for murder after 17 years and the victim would finally get his day in court.

48 HOURS MYSTERY: "Secrets of the Well" is produced by Marc Goldbaum, Katherine Davis and Gayane Keshishyan. Anthony Batson is the senior producer and Susan Zirinsky is the executive producer.
