CAN A CANADIAN TEEN CURE CANCER?

ABC News Primetime Looks at a Boy Known as Adam the Healer, Thursday, July, 13

Can a 19-year-old from Canada heal people of incurable conditions such as cancer and multiple sclerosis? Thousands of people pay money and travel long distances to find out -- attending mass healings where Adam, who is known as the Dreamhealer, says he can help people in ways no one else can. While some critics question whether he is taking advantage of the desperate and the sick, there are some astounding stories of tumors disappearing and cancers mysteriously going into remission. Primetimes John Quiones investigates the phenomenon, following stories of the desperate people who have come hoping for miracles, sitting down with the healer himself, and interviewing some experts who weigh in as well. Primetime airs THURSDAY, JULY 13 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

At the age of fifteen, Adam says he began to manifest bizarre powers through strange telekinetic events, like pencils flying out of his hands. His father says he was initially skeptical, until, he says, Adam cured his moms MS, which to this day has not returned. While Adam describes himself as a normal 19-year-old, he has seen abnormal success, and attention has snowballed. He has written three bestselling books and is a well paid author and speaker. His new book, The Path of the Dreamhealer, appears in the United States this week. He is estimated to make over a million dollars, but according to Adam, that is not his motivation.

Today Adams 600-seat seminars sell out months in advance, but why? Primetime takes infra-red cameras inside pitch-black healing rooms to see what actually happens at the workshops where many claim he has brought them back from death. And for the first time ever allowed on camera, Adams face is revealed. The miracle mans appearance is surprising. He is not an old prophet instead he is a boy who still lives at home with his parents.

Quiones also follows several people who put their faith in Adam, hoping for a miracle. Among them are 14-year-old Lucy, who has a condition with her knees; fourth-grade teacher Linda, who is diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer; and Debbie, who was told her fianc would not regain consciousness after an axe-attack while serving in the Canadian services in Afghanistan. Primetime is with Adam for a one-on-one healing session with Debbie and her fianc. In addition Primetime shows Adam undergoing a scientific test to try and provide proof of his powers.

Some scientists say Adams abilities are explainable, and many people believe they are significantly better as a result of Adams healing. Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard says, We have within ourselves self-healing capacities that can be turned on by belief and expectancy, which raises the question of whether its Adam that heals people, or perhaps the power of their own belief and positive thinking.

DIANE SAWYER, CHRIS CUOMO, CYNTHIA McFADDEN and JOHN QUIONES are the anchors of "Primetime DAVID SLOAN is the executive producer.
