AFTER NINE YEARS AND FOUR TRIALS, IS THE SEARCH FOR MICHELE HARRIS' KILLER AND THE CASE AGAINST HER ESTRANGED HUSBAND CAL HARRIS OVER? "48 HOURS PRESENTS: CAL HARRIS: THE FINAL VERDICT"

Saturday May 28, 2016

After nine years and four trials, has the search for what happened to Michele Harris and the case against her estranged husband Cal Harris come to a close? Erin Moriarty and 48 HOURS report the latest in the case in an updated edition of "Cal Harris: The Final Verdict" to be rebroadcast May 28, 2016 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Prosecutors in northern New York believe Cal Harris is guilty of killing his estranged wife, Michele, to preserve his fortune. Twice, he's been tried and found guilty, and twice those cases have been overturned. A third trial ended in a mistrial. This time out, Harris and his legal team asked for a bench trial, leaving his fate in the hands of a single judge.

48 HOURS has been covering the Harris case since 2006 and had the first TV interview with the businessman. It's a story that has made headlines and has been the talk of the Tioga County, New York, area since Michele Harris disappeared on the night of Sept. 11, 2001.

In 2005, without finding a body or a murder weapon, police arrested Cal Harris for his wife's murder. Investigators felt they had a good circumstantial case buoyed by tiny drops of blood found in the Harris' home.

"I feel like I'm being kidnapped in broad daylight in front of my kids, in front of everyone, and no one can do anything about it," Harris told Moriarty before the third trial. "And now we're - we're to a point now where I have to solve this case."

Not everyone believes Harris is innocent, however. "He should be in a jail cell someplace and not having an enjoyable life out there," said Greg Taylor, Michele's brother.

48 HOURS PRESENTS: "Cal Harris: The Final Verdict" is produced by Lisa Freed, Ruth Chenetz, Marc Goldbaum and Anthony Venditti. Linda Martin is the update producer. David Franklin, David Spungen, Atticus Brady, Peter Stader and Diana Modica are the editors. Al Briganti is the executive editor. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.

48 HOURS PRESENTS: "Cal Harris: The Final Verdict" is the second broadcast in a Saturday night double feature.

The first, "Highway of Tears," is an updated rebroadcast of Peter Van Sant and 48 HOURS' investigation into a string of murders and disappearances of young women along Canada's Highway 16, to be broadcast at 9:00 PM, ET/PT. Since 1969, 18 or more girls and women have been killed or gone missing in the area of Highway 16, earning it the nickname "The Highway of Tears." This week the story made front-page news and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the country would conduct an inquiry into the disappearances that will cost upwards of $31 million.

Along the majestic roadway in Canada are signs warning women not to hitchhike because a killer might be on the loose. As part of his unprecedented access inside the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's investigation, Van Sant reports police think there may be more than one killer.

48 HOURS PRESENTS: "Highway of Tears" is produced by Paul LaRosa, Clare Friedland and Alec Sirken. Ryan Smith is the field producer. Linda Martin is the update producer. Peter Schweitzer is the senior producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.
