McCain spent his legendary life serving his country, spending three decades in the United States Senate and a quarter century in the Navy. While flying bombing missions over North Vietnam, he was shot down, captured and tortured, surviving nearly six years as a prisoner of war. When McCain returned home, he was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart, but yet he always denied being a hero. McCain's storied political career began in 1982 as a congressman in Tempe, Arizona. In 1987, he switched to the Senate, which he had a lasting impact on. He became known as a maverick, frequently voting against the common view of his Republican party. McCain passed away at the age of 81 surrounded by family near his Sedona, Arizona, home.

"20/20" is anchored by David Muir and Amy Robach. David Sloan is senior executive producer.
