By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

OUTNUMBERED (FOX) - Ana Ortiz ("Ugly Betty") is the first to be cast in the comedy pilot, about two parents who are overwhelmed by their three kids. She'll play the mother, Sue Tulley, "a frazzled, at-her-wit's-end, working mother of three, a multi-tasker by necessity and somewhat of a hot-head." Said half-hour is based on the U.K. series of the same name, which featured Claire Skinner in the mother role. Larry Charles is directing the project from a script by Barbara Wallace and Thomas R. Wolfe with 20th Century Television, Chernin Entertainment and Hat Trick Productions co-producing. FOX previously took a stab at a domestic take in 2008 with Brooke Bloom and Ken Marino in the lead roles.

UNTITLED MARK WILSON/PATRICK MCKENNA PROJECT (CBS, New!) - Actors-turned-writers Mark Wilson and Patrick McKenna have booked an ensemble cop drama at the Eye set in a Canadian-U.S. cross-border town. Canadian broadcaster CTV is co-producing the potential hour, which comes from White Pines Pictures ("The Border"), as part of a script development deal the company inked with CBS back in August. Wilson and McKenna will co-write the script under the supervision of David Barlow who will executive produce alongside White Pines principal Peter Raymont. Said company previously booked "One U.N. Plaza," a drama "set against the backdrop of the United Nations in New York City," at the network during the last development cycle which didn't move forward.

UNTITLED RUSSELL PETERS PROJECT (NBC, New!) - Comedian Russell Peters (Showtime's "Comics Without Borders") is set to be the focus of a potential comedy at the network loosely based on his life. Rob Long ("Cheers") is on board to pen the script to the project, which comes from Universal Media Studios. American Work's Ravi Nandan and Scot Armstrong will also executive produce alongside Long and Peters. Peters "was raised in Canada to parents who had immigrated from India, was married earlier this year and is expecting his first child in 2011." In addition to hosting "Borders," Peters toplined his own stand-up special ("Red, White and Brown") on Showtime in 2008.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES (The CW) - Executive producer Kevin Williamson has inked a hefty three-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. The pact, financial details of which weren't released, calls for the prolific writer/producer to remain at the helm of the CW hit as well as develop new series projects for the studio.
