By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

THE DESCENDANTS (Sundance; W: Aaron Guzikowski; D: TBA) - Julianne Nicholson ("Boardwalk Empire") is set to topline the upcoming drama, about Harold Jensen (yet to be cast), a sheriff struggling to keep his family together while simultaneously policing two clashing communities: the small town where he grew up and the neighboring Ramapo Mountains, home of the Ramapo Mountain Indians. She'll play his wife, Jean (Nicholson), "an over-controlling and over-bearing recovering alcoholic suffering from dementia stemming from her alcohol use and the loss of her brother who goes on a rampage when she finds her daughter has run off with her new boyfriend." Bridget Carpenter and Sarah Condon also serve as executive producers. (Deadline.com)

THE LEFTOVERS (HBO/Warner Bros.; W: Damon Lindelof & Tom Perrotta; D: Peter Berg) - Charlie Carver and Max Carver ("Teen Wolf") have both landed roles on the drama pilot, which takes place after the Rapture happens but not quite like it's supposed to. They'll play happy-go-lucky identical twins Scott (Charlie) and Adam (Max) Frost, whose laid-back demeanor brings levity to a dark world. Justin Theroux, Margaret Qualley, Amanda Warren, Ann Dowd, Carrie Coon, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler and Michael Gaston also star. (Deadline.com)

MCCARTHYS, THE (CBS/Sony; W: Brian Gallivan; D: Fred Savage) - The Eye has commissioned a new pilot for the comedy, about a sports-crazed Irish-Catholic family that shares a three decker house in Boston and the one member, Ronny (Jake Lacy), that dares to move out on his own. Originally shot as a single-camera project, the new incarnation will be multi-camera. Jack McGee, Jacki Weaver, Jessica Chaffin, Jimmy Dunn and Joey McIntyre also starred in the Sony Pictures Television-based half-hour and talks are underway to bring back said cast. Olive Bridge Entertainment's Will Gluck also served as an executive producer. (Deadline.com)

AND IN OTHER NEWS... - "Spin City" creator Gary David Goldberg passed away yesterday at age 68 (Deadline.com); and James McCaffrey has been cast as Harvey's late father Gordon Specter in an upcoming episode of "Suits" in in which "his advice helps Harvey decide whether to stay at the DA's office or return to work for Jessica" (TVLine.com).
