ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION, THE (Amazon, New!) - MGM Television is reportedly on track to bring a small screen take on the 1984 cult feature to the streaming service. Kevin Smith is spearheading the project, additional details of which weren't given. (Deadline.com)
DEAR WHTIE PEOPLE (Netflix) - Brandon P. Belll, who played Troy Fairbanks in the original film, is slated to reprise his role for the upcoming series incarnation. Also signing on is Logan Browning as Samantha White, "a biracial film major at an Ivy League school whose radio show 'Dear White People' lands her a spot in a campus political movement"; and Yvette Lee Bowser as an executive producer. DESIGNATED SURVIVOR (ABC) - Malik Yoba ("Empire") has been tapped for a seven-episode arc on the new series as Jason Atwood, "the seasoned Deputy Director of the FBI. He's a mentor, boss and occasional sparring partner for Hannah Wells (Maggie Q) as she conducts her investigation into who blew up the Capitol Building, which claimed nearly the entirety of the U.S. government." EMPIRE (FOX) - Ajiona Alexus and Jeremy Carver have been cast as the teenage versions of Cookie and Lucious while Ezri Walker will likewise recur as Zeah, "a nerdy 16-year old with an edge and real talent as a rapper. With his high GPA and serious smarts, this teenager finds himself torn between a future at an elite university and a career at Empire under the guidance of the legendary Lucious Lyon." (Deadline.com)
GOLDBERGS, THE (ABC) - Executive producer Chris Bishop has signed a two-year overall deal with Sony Pictures Television where he'll continue on the series as well as develop new projects. (Deadline.com)
GREAT NEWS (NBC) - Nicole Richie has signed onto the Peacock's midseason comedy as Portia, "the hip, young co-host of The Breakdown, the cable news show within Great News. Sometimes a shrewd social media genius, sometimes a clueless idiot, Portia has little interest in her older co-host's (John Michael Higgins) hard-hitting traditional vision for the show." She'll take over for Kimrie Lewis-Davis, who played the role in the original pilot. (THR.com)
GRINDER, THE (FOX) - Actor/director Fred Savage has signed an overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television where he'll write, direct and produce projects for the studio as well as potentially lend his acting services. (Deadline.com)
IMPRACTICAL JOKERS (truTV) - The cable channel announced at San Diego Comic-Con it has renewed the series for a 26-episode sixth season. (@truTVjokers)
SNOWFALL (FX) - Emily Rios and Michael Hyatt are the latest to sign onto the revamped pilot. She'll play Lucia, "the self-possessed daughter of a Mexican crime family that imports and sells marijuana throughout Los Angeles"; while Hyatt will portray Sharon "Cissy" Saint, "the no-nonsense mother of Franklin (Damson Idris). Frustrated in both her personal and professional lives, Cissy has sacrificed her dreams to give Franklin opportunities she never had." (Deadline.com)
STORY OF GOD WITH MORGAN FREEMAN, THE (NGC) - The cable channel has commissioned another three episodes of the series to premiere in early 2017. (Variety.com)
