WORLD CUP SKI CHAMP ADMITS TO BEING DRUNK
ON THE SLOPES -- "60 MINUTES" SUNDAY
When he competes for Olympic gold medals in Turin next month, count on World Cup champion Bode Miller to be sober because, as he tells Bob Simon, skiing drunk is too hard. He ought to know. He says he's done it before and won't promise not to do it again. The maverick skier and one of the best hopes for U.S. Olympic gold will be profiled on 60 MINUTES Sunday, Jan. 8 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
The partying has affected his past racing performances, he says. "Definitely. There have been times when I've been in really tough shape at the top of the course," says Miller.
"Talk about a hard challenge right there. If you ever tried to ski when you're wasted, it's not easy," he tells Simon. "Try and ski a slalom whenyou hit a gate less than every one second, so it's risky. You're putting your life at risk. It's like driving drunk, only there are no rules about it in ski racing," says Miller, who can reach speeds of 90 miles per hour.
So he'll never try that again? "No, I'm not saying that," he tells Simon.
The 28-year-old phenom is famous for speaking his mind and isn't shy when telling Simon about his unconventional childhood, his workout routine and his feelings about money.
How does he feel about winning medals? He doesn't care. "Whether somebody wants me to get five gold medals or whatever it is, I sort of feel like they are all other people's concerns and issues, not really mine.I don't really care what everybody else says," he tells Simon.
