ABC NEWS' ELIZABETH VARGAS REPORTS ON THE MYSTERY OF MIRACLES AND BRINGS THE STORIES OF THREE ORDINARY AMERICANS WHO SAY THEY'VE RECEIVED EXTRAORDINARY GIFTS, TONIGHT, FRIDAY, APRIL 2 ON "20/20"

The mystery of miracles fascinates people worldwide. According to numerous studies, more than 80% of the population believes in miracles, and about half of people living today feel that they've experienced a miracle firsthand. On this week's "20/20," Elizabeth Vargas explores the intrigue surrounding miracles and brings the stories of three ordinary Americans who say they've received extraordinary gifts. All three people featured in Friday's broadcast say their lives were saved by the work of Saints � or sainthood candidates � and their intercession in the delivery of miracles. From recovering from a terrifying and near-fatal accident to gaining the ability to walk again or being cured of cancer, they all feel that they experienced something man and science cannot explain.

For Christians around the world, this Friday marks the holy day of Good Friday, as well as the fifth anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul II. As part of the broadcast, "20/20" will report on miracles and their relationship to sainthood, and on the canonization process of the Catholic Church.

While many people believe in miracles, there are also many skeptics who discount them. Throughout the broadcast, "20/20" will look at both sides of this debate. Do miracles occur? Or does science -- or some other factor -- play a role in the lives of people who say they've experienced something stronger than what can be explained.
