A STRICT DISCIPLINARIAN TRADES LIVES WITH AN ADVOCATE OF
THE "RADICAL UNSCHOOLING" MOVEMENT, ON ABC'S "WIFE SWAP"
"Avery-Lamb/Martin" - Cindy Avery-Lamb, who's big on discipline and order, and Dayna Martin, an advocate of "Radical Unschooling," trade lives and homes for two weeks on "Wife Swap," THURSDAY, APRIL 11 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
In "Wife Swap," two mothers of families, each with opposing values, trade households, lifestyles and children (but not bedrooms) in a two week-long challenge: In the first part of the exchange, each mom moves into the other's home and agrees to follow a manual of "household rules" written by the departing mother, including how to parent, manage their social life and do house work. Everything changes in the second week when "new mommy" takes charge, introduces her own rules and runs the "nest" her way. At the end of the second week, the two couples meet for the first time in a raw exchange of views, making frank assessments of one another and discussing the experience.
Cindy Avery-Lamb lives in suburban San Diego, CA with her husband, Andrade, son Jory (17) and daughter Najia (11.) Cindy is a strict disciplinarian and runs a tight ship at home. Her family adheres to a detailed list of chores and scheduled activities, including Cindy's regular "room checks" to make sure her children's bedrooms are neat and clean and up to her meticulous standards. Cindy also keeps tabs on her children at all times, including monitoring their conversations on social media, and she always knows where they are and whom they're with.
Dayna Martin lives in Madison, NH with her husband, Joe, and their four children, Devin (13), Tiffany (11), Ivy (8) and Orion (4). Dayna is an advocate of "Radical Unschooling," believes that schools are like prisons and that institutionalizing a child is one of the cruelest things a parent can do. The Martin children live life as if they were on permanent summer vacation, with no chores, mandatory bedtime or responsibilities.
When Cindy arrives in Madison, she's surprised by the rundown state of the Martin home. Once inside, she's truly taken back and decides to stay at a local hotel instead of with the family. As Cindy gets to know the Martins, she can't believe that Dayna and Joe allow their children to use electronic devices without restriction, swear without punishment and enjoy the freedom to make all of their own decisions - including Devin's to get his septum pierced at 13. When it comes time for the change of rules, tempers flare between Joe and Cindy when she tries to wake up the children with an air horn.
Meanwhile in San Diego, Dayna finds her new family reserved and quiet. When morning comes, she adheres to the rules, waking up Jody and Najia with the hallway fire alarm. Throughout the week she continues to find the home's rigid structure hard to take and feels that Andrade and Cindy are hard on the children. When it comes time for her rules, Dayna invites Jody and Najia's friends over for their first-ever house party, giving them a chance to experience some freedom and fun at home.
"Wife Swap" is produced by Zodiak USA. Mike Gamson and Bruce Toms serve as executive producers. It is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC's selected HD format, with 5.1-channel sound. This program carries a TV-14, L parental guideline.
