"48 HOURS" LAUNCHES AN INDEPENDENT FORENSIC EXAMINATION THAT RAISES MAJOR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DEATH OF A WALL STREET MILLIONAIRE IN "48 HOURS: PARADISE LOST"

SEASON PREMIERE AIRS SATURDAY, SEPT. 27 AT 10:00 P.M.

Did a Wall Street millionaire shoot himself, or was he murdered in his 50,000-square-foot home in Costa Rica? Susan Spencer and 48 HOURS head to the rainforest to investigate what happened to John Bender for "Paradise Lost," to be broadcast Saturday, Sept. 27 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Ann and John Bender moved to the jungle of Central America to live a dream. After making a $100 million fortune on Wall Street, John Bender and his wife used their wealth to buy 5,000 acres in Costa Rica. They built a nature preserve, along with an elaborate, four-story hilltop home with no walls or windows as the centerpiece. The dream turned into a nightmare, though, on Jan. 8, 2010, when Bender died from a bullet wound to the back of his head.

"I saw the outline of the gun... and he had it pointed at his head," Ann Bender says in the 2014-2015 season premiere of 48 HOURS. "He was going to die that night, no matter what."

Ann Bender said her husband was trying to kill himself. Prosecutors in Costa Rica say it was murder. Adding to the debate, 48 HOURS brought in a world-famous independent forensic team, Richard and Selma Eikelenboom, to the house where John died. After examining all of the evidence, the experts say there were problems with the conclusion by the prosecution.

"48 HOURS: Paradise Lost" tells the story of a married couple that seemingly had it all. They shared a love of nature, but they also shared a common struggle with severe depression. John Bender's search for a safe haven and purpose for his life didn't turn out as expected, despite efforts to improve the area around him. As a couple they became very isolated, in spite of what they did for the community. They were not entirely welcome by the locals.

Indeed, Ann tells 48 HOURS there was an attempt to abduct the couple in 2001 and later an attempted break-in at their home, which forced them to arm themselves and hire security guards. They lived in fear, she says.

Likewise, there are allegations that the trustee of the Bender's $100 million fortune siphoned money from the trust, adding another element to the investigation.

"What you think is paradise isn't necessarily paradise," journalist and CBS News consultant Ned Zeman tells 48 HOURS. "They were living a very inward life... and they cut off the world."

Nineteen months after John Bender died, Ann Bender was officially charged with murder. The legal system in Costa Rica is a very different than in the United States, however, and Ann Bender would experience its impact.

"I tried to stop him," Ann Bender says, "and I've been accused of killing him."

Did Ann kill John, was it an accident, or was it suicide? Spencer and 48 HOURS tell the Benders' dream-turned-nightmare story through interviews with Ann Bender; John's friend, Pete Delisi; Ann's current boyfriend, Greg Fischer; forensic experts Richard and Selma Eikelenboom; Zeman and others.

48 HOURS: "Paradise Lost" is produced by Josh Yager, Doug Longhini, Ana Real, Shoshanah Wolfson and Tamara Weitzman. Peter Schweitzer is the senior producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.
