"48 HOURS" TAKES VIEWERS ON A FIRST-EVER TOUR OF THE CRIME SCENE ABOARD THE YACHT "ESCAPE"

Maureen Maher and 48 HOURS investigate the fatal heroin overdose of a Google executive and the young woman charged with killing him in "Kiss of Death and the Google Exec," to be broadcast Jan. 24, 2015 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

It's a story that exposes the collision of two lives - Forrest Hayes, a hugely successful technology genius playing outside of his marriage, and Alix Tichelman, a troubled, tattooed model from a wealthy family who met men through an online dating service. One is dead, the other charged with giving him a lethal dose of heroin.

48 HOURS takes viewers for the first time ever to the crime scene aboard the yacht "Escape," where Hayes died. It was there, police say, the Google executive's own high-tech cameras recorded Tichelman injecting Hayes, cleaning up the scene and stepping over him to leave.

"She's a killer," Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Stephen Clark says of Tichelman. "And she certainly was cold."

Maher and 48 HOURS report on Tichelman's relationships as revealed through never-before-made-public text messages she sent to friends. Maher also interviews one of Tichelman's former boyfriends, who believes she called him after leaving Hayes on his yacht.

Hayes and Tichelman met on an online dating service known for connecting wealthy men with women looking to be spoiled.

"I think that some part of him really wanted to, like, taste that other side of life, that kind of darker side, wilder, more exotic side of life," The Daily Beast writer and 48 HOURS consultant Michael Daly says of Hayes.

Hayes was 51 when he died on Nov. 22, 2013. The married father of five worked in Google X, the company's secret development department, and lived in an upscale Santa Cruz neighborhood. When he wasn't working on his next tech innovation, he spent his time on the 46-foot yacht "Escape."

Was Hayes's death an accident or something more sinister?

What is clear is that Hayes died of a heroin overdose. Also clear was that Hayes was on the boat with Tichelman. At issue is whether Tichelman knew Hayes was in distress when she left him, as police maintain, or if his death was accidental, as public defenders representing Tichelman claim.

Clark isn't buying the accidental defense. "I don't see how she didn't know," he says. "This is somebody who's been down this road before. This wasn't her first rodeo with this."

Investigators would learn that just months before Hayes's death, Tichelman's then-boyfriend, Dean Riopelle, an Atlanta night club owner, who also died from a heroin overdose, according to police.

"We were surprised at the similarities in their case to our case," says Clark.

Tichelman's former boyfriend, Chad Cornell, was stunned to learn police believe she was involved in Hayes' death. Cornell tells 48 HOURS he was with her just hours before Tichelman met up with Hayes, and she had told him then she was headed to visit friends on a boat in Santa Cruz.

"Later that night, she actually woke me out of bed with a phone call," Cornell says. "She's, you know, really frantic on the phone. She sounded very upset. She talked about how her friends had started doing heroin and a bunch of hardcore drugs on the boat and made her uncomfortable. And that she had to leave."

Chad now believes she was talking about her night with Forrest Hayes.

Maher also talks with Brandon Wade, CEO of the dating website SeekingArrangement.com, which is how police say Hayes met Tichelman. "It's about finding romance and passion," Wade tells Maher of his site. "I'm unapologetic about the fact that sex is involved in a romantic relationship. And money is involved in a romantic relationship. But that does make the romantic relationship prostitution."

Santa Cruz police would conduct an elaborate sting and arrest Tichelman for the death of Hayes. Investigators in Georgia are now taking a second look at how Riopelle died, which had been classified as an accidental heroin overdose.

Maher and 48 HOURS tell the story of Hayes' final hours, and Tichelman's path from a childhood in Atlanta to the fateful night in Santa Cruz through interviews with Daly, Santa Cruz Sentinel reporter and 48 HOURS consultant Stephen Baxter, Cornell, and friends who attended a Maine boarding school with Tichelman.
