A YOUNG WIFE SHOT DEAD, HER SOLDIER HUSBAND PULLED THE TRIGGER - WAS IT AN ACCIDENT OR WAS IT MURDER?
Skylar Nemetz Vows in "48 HOURS: THE SOLDIER'S WIFE" He Didn't Intend to Kill His Wife, on Saturday, May 7
Skylar Nemetz shot his beautiful young wife Danielle in the back of the head while she sat at a computer - that's not in dispute. But what is in dispute are the circumstances leading up to the shooting. The former Army infantryman swears he accidentally fired the gun. Prosecutors say he deliberately shot his wife in a fit of jealousy.
What is the truth? Erin Moriarty and 48 HOURS investigate the death of Danielle Nemetz and the case against Skylar in "The Soldier's Wife," to be broadcast Saturday, May 7 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. 48 HOURS explores what Danielle's death did to everyone involved and the extent to which a mother will go to defend a son accused of murder.
"He is seeing this as an accident. His family sees this as an accident," says Gregory Greer, deputy prosecutor in Pierce County, WA. "We believe he murdered his wife."
In his first interview, Nemetz tells "48 HOURS" he loved his wife, misses her greatly, and never meant for her to die.
"I feel like my heart was ripped outta my chest and all the veins, too, with the day that my wife died," Nemetz tells Moriarty.
"But you caused it," Moriarty responds.
"I know," Nemetz says. "That's the most painful thing out of all of this is knowing that I caused it."
Nemetz had just returned home from a nearly three-week training deployment when the shot was fired from an AR-15 rifle - the same weapon Nemetz had given Danielle for her birthday.
This is a not a typical "'whodunit." Skylar admits he is responsible for shooting his wife. The only question the jury now must determine is "why." If the evidence supports Skylar's claim that it was an accident, he is guilty, at the most, of manslaughter. If, however, he pulled that trigger intentionally - even in a momentary fit of anger - Skylar Nemetz is a murderer and could face more than 30 years in prison.
"I can live with I am the reason Danielle died," Nemetz tells Moriarty. "But I can't live with being called a murderer."
Moriarty and 48 HOURS report the story through an interview with Nemetz, his mother, Danette Heller, prosecutors, Danielle's friends and family, investigators and jurors. 48 HOURS: "A Soldier's Wife" is produced by Lisa Freed, Liza Finley, Allen Alter and Greg Fisher. Ken Blum, Richard Barber, David Spungen and Phil Tangel are the editors. Patti Aronofsky is the senior producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.
