New details on Gabby Petito murder case and civil suit brought against the killer's family.

AFTER BRIAN LAUNDRIE'S NOTEBOOK MURDER CONFESSION BECAME PUBLIC, '20/20' REPORTS ON THE LATEST DETAILS OF GABBY PETITO CASE, INCLUDING CIVIL SUIT PETITO FAMILY FILED AGAINST HIS PARENTS

'20/20' Airs Friday, July 8 (9:01-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC

Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie captured national attention when the two left for a cross-country adventure, sharing their seemingly happy world via social media, but only Laundrie returned. Laundrie went back to his family's Florida residence, without his fiancé, and Petito's family demanded answers about her whereabouts. When Laundrie vanished, the attention intensified as internet sleuths who helped crack the case wide open investigated and theorized, garnering over 1 billion views on TikTok for #GabbyPetito. A two-hour "20/20" reports on the horror that unfolded in the beauty of Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park, the search for Laundrie and eventual discovery of his remains. Authorities determined Laundrie killed Petito and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. On the heels of Laundrie's family's attorney releasing Brian's notebook where he admits to killing Petito, the program also reveals new details about the civil lawsuit the Petito family filed against Laundrie's parents and gives an update on the ongoing efforts of the Gabby Petito Foundation. The program also includes interviews with Jim Winder, former Moab, Utah, police chief; experts on body language; and legal analysts, who discuss the viral body camera footage from the couple's police stop in Moab, days before Petito disappeared; Miranda Baker, a young woman who gave a hitchhiking Laundrie a ride in Wyoming; Jenn Bethune, who found the couple's missing van and called the FBI; Jason Jensen, a private investigator and co-founder of the Cold Case Coalition who searched Grand Teton National Park with his cadaver dog; and Mykel Hawke, a retired special forces combat veteran and survival expert who takes "20/20" cameras through the dangerous swamps of the Carlton Reserve in Florida, where authorities found Laundrie's body. The program dives into why the Petito case went viral and the outcry for the same attention to be applied to the cold cases of others - especially people of color and Indigenous women who have disappeared in the same area as Petito. "20/20" airs Friday, July 8 (9:01-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC. (Rebroadcast. ABC OAD: 10/29/21)
