TV BAILIFF TAKES THE STAND IN REAL-LIFE COURTROOM DRAMA
This Week's "48 Hours" Reports in "Deputy Spivey on Trial"
Saturday, Jan. 11 at 10:00 PM, ET/PT
Renard Spivey, the TV bailiff who was accused of murdering his wife, opens up for the first time on television to 48 HOURS contributor Natalie Morales, about the trial, his wife and more on "Deputy Spivey on Trial," to be broadcast Saturday, Jan. 11 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and streaming on Paramount+.
Spivey, best known to viewers as the bailiff on "Justice for All with Judge Christina Perez," was charged with killing his wife in 2019. Spivey told the 911 operator he accidentally shot his wife during a fight over a gun.
"I was really scared 'cause ... you never put your finger on the trigger unless you prepared to shoot." He says that's when his police experience kicked in.
"Well ... I was afraid 'cause I've never been in a situation like that before ... the best thing I knew in my training is to try to take the weapon away from her," he says.
Then the gun went off.
The episode dives into the details of the case, including the multiple gunshots that led authorities to cast doubt on Spivey's claims of innocence.
"The multiple shots is definitely what gives everyone a lot of pause as to why it's not an accident," former prosecutor and CBS News consultant Lisa Andrews says, pointing to the central controversy surrounding the case.
Spivey insists his wife's death was an accident.
"I love my wife. I did everything for her," he tells Morales. "Anything she wanted ... I always treated her like my queen."
