NBC Gives Full Season Nods to 'Whoopi,' 'Happy Family'

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- NBC has made its first full season pickups of the 2003-04 season, giving 22-episode nods to its freshman comedies "Whoopi" and "Happy Family." The news was announced via press release yesterday afternoon.
"These two shows have fulfilled our goal of opening Tuesday night for us, in a way that we haven�t been able to do in years," NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker said in the release. "In the face of extremely abnormal competition, these two shows have given us tremendous stability and important comedy building blocks."
"Whoopi" has averaged a 3.3 rating/10 share this season among adults 18-49, up 22% from NBC's Tuesday, 8:00/7:00c time slot average at this point last season. As for "Happy Family," the comedy has snagged a 3.4 rating/9 share average in the key demographic, up 10% in year-to-year comparisons.
Meanwhile in other NBC news, the Peacock has ordered five additional scripts of fellow newcomer "Miss Match." The extra scripts mean more episodes of the Alicia Silverstone-led series could be around the corner. NBC asked for five additional scripts of both "Whoopi" and "Happy Family" before going forward with their back-nine orders.
