NBC Unveils Summer 2004 Slate
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- NBC has pulled the lid off its summer plans, as three of last summer's hits are set to return and two new series are set to launch.

Here's a breakdown of all five projects, taken from NBC's press release (premiere dates are listed in parenthesis):

FOR LOVE OR MONEY (two hours, Monday, June 7 at 9:00/8:00c) -- This series - last summer's hottest unscripted drama returns for a third edition and again centers on 15 beautiful women who will compete for the affections of one lucky man. Jordan Murphy ("Boston Public") hosts the 12-episode series, guiding the contestants through numerous twists and turns as they try to win the heart of a handsome and charming entrepreneur. The upcoming season of "For Love or Money" breaks new ground by introducing an all-new game and a whole new twist. And this time, the price of love is even greater. But no matter how different the game may be, we're back to that very same question - Who is in it for Loveand who is in it for Money? "For Love or Money" is a production of Nash Entertainment & 3 Ball Productions. Bruce Nash (NBC's "Meet My Folks," "Mr. Personality") is the executive producer, along with J.D. Roth ("Endurance," "Moolah Beach"), Todd Nelson ("Endurance," "Moolah Beach") and John Foy ("The Martin Short Show").

LAST COMIC STANDING (two hours, Tuesday, June 8 at 8:00/7:00c) - Hosted and executive-produced by actor/comedian Jay Mohr ("Mohr Sports"), this returning series has an 14-episode commitment and features a nationwide talent search for professional and non-professional comedians (both male and female). Once the selection process is narrowed to 10 finalists, after the semi-finals in New York and Los Angeles, the program will then follow the comedians as they live together in a house and compete for the ultimate prize-an exclusive talent contract with NBC.

WHO WANTS TO MARRY MY DAD? (Monday, June 14 at 10:00/9:00c) - In this second edition of last summer's hit series, the three adult daughters of a handsome single father choose among thirteen women to decide which one would be the ideal wife for their Dad. Promising even more surprising twists and turns than the original series, "Dad" will also include the outrageous "secret tasks" and popular lie detector tests that made the show such a hit with viewers last summer. With an emphasis on romance, the series follows the courtship of "Dad" and the female contestants over six episodes. Adding to the fun will be a secret mole (the kids' aunt pretending to be one of the contestants), "Dad" going undercover in the first episode to secretly meet the women without them knowing it's him and a high-stakes adventure where the women's ex-boyfriends show up as jockeys on horseback at Santa Anita racetrack. In the end, the girls will decide which woman "Dad" will marry and their father proposes to the winner. The series is produced by NBC Studios and Nash Entertainment. Bruce Nash ("For Love or Money") who created both "Meet My Folks" and "Who Wants to Marry My Dad?" serves as executive producer along with Scott Satin ("The Most Outrageous Game Show Moments").

THE NEXT ACTION STAR (Tuesday, June 15 at 8:00/7:00c) - This reality series from NBC Studios, Silver Pictures Television and GRB Entertainment pits prospective action stars from across the country against one another in a radically new competition that will produce America's next high-powered male and female action heroes. The two winners will then star in an NBC movie "Hit Me" (working title), produced by Silver Pictures Television set to air on August 11 (9-11 p.m. ET) on NBC. Over the course of 10 one-hour episodes, the 14 finalists will be given the star treatment, living together in a Hollywood Hills mansion, while enduring a rigorous schedule that includes daily acting lessons, combat and stunt training, underwater work, descender training, race car driving and wirework. Each week, the climax of the episode will be a breath-taking stunt action sequence competition and each week one pair of contestants will be eliminated until the final two are named the Next Action Stars earning starring roles in the Silver Pictures movie, which is the series' finale.

COME TO PAPA (Thursday, June 3 at 8:30/7:30c) - Comedian Tom Papa ("Analyze That") stars in NBC's new comedy, "Come to Papa," which is based on Papa's wildly successful standup. Papa stars as a reporter for a large newspaper who has bigger plans to become a comedy writer and move out of Jersey. He and his wife Karen (Jennifer Aspen, "Vanilla Sky") are happily married and are each other's best friend. Tom's lifelong friend Judah (Robert Patrick Benedict, "Felicity") has chosen to not work and live off of his $8,000 a year trust fund. At the newspaper, Tom's boss Blevin (Steve Carell, "Bruce Almighty," "The Daily Show") constantly attempts to make the office staff like him better than Tom which usually backfires and leaves him with an even greater disdain for Tom. Former Los Angeles Laker and Chicago Bulls star John Salley ("Bad Boys II") plays the angry, seven-foot-tall mailman who just grows angrier every time Tom tries to befriend him. Created and written by Greg Malins (Friends) and Tom Papa, the show is executive produced by Malins and Andy Ackerman (Curb Your Enthusiam, Seinfeld). The pilot was directed by Ackerman and shot at Hollywood Center Studios. Come to Papa is an NBC Studios and Warner Bros. Television production.
