ACADEMY AWARD WINNER JESSICA LANGE AND EMMY AWARD WINNER TAMMY BLANCHARD TO STAR IN "SYBIL," A NEW MOVIE THAT WILL BEGIN PRODUCTION IN NOVA SCOTIA FOR BROADCAST ON THE CBS TELEVISION NETWORK
SYBIL, a new television movie starring Academy Award winner Jessica Lange (Tootsie) and Emmy Award winner Tammy Blanchard (Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows) will begin production on January 22 in Nova Scotia for broadcast on the CBS Television Network.
SYBIL is based on the best-selling book of the same name by Flora Rheta Schreiber. It is the true story of a young woman who suffers from dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder), a psychological condition where two or more distinct personalities exist within the same person as the result of severe trauma and abuse inflicted during childhood.
In the movie, Sybil (Blanchard) is introduced to Dr. Corneila Wilbur (Lange), a psychiatrist who begins treatment after Sybil attempts suicide. During their sessions, Sybil confides in Dr. Wilbur that she frequently loses her memory and cannot account for large blocks of time. With the help of her doctor, Sybil slowly remembers the physical, emotional and sexual abuse inflicted on her as a child by her mentally disturbed mother. As Sybil starts to recall her troubled past, she reveals 16 separate and distinct personalities, each varying in age and personal appearance, which she created in order to cope with the cruelty she suffered as a child. Throughout the course of Sybils treatment, Dr. Wilbur becomes committed to helping Sybil face the memories which haunt her so that her fractured personality can be healed.
SYBIL is being produced by The Wolper Organization and Norman Stephens Productions, distributed by Warner Bros. Television. Emmy Award-winning producer Norman Stephens (Bang, Bang, Youre Dead) and Mark Wolper (Alex Haleys Queen) are the executive producers. Multi- Emmy Award-winning director Joseph Sargent (Miss Rose White) is directing from a script written by John Pielmeier (Hitler: The Rise of Evil).
