Mixed Results for Usa, Sci Fi Winter Launches
By Brian Ford Sullivan (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- USA originals "Monk" and "Psych" both returned to strong results on Friday while Sunday's premiere of "The Dresden Files" and the return of "Battlestar Galactica" on Sci Fi drew more mixed results.

5.2 million viewers tuned into "Monk's" 2007 debut, including 1.7 million adults 18-49 and 2.2 million adults 25-54, where it was the top draw across all basic cable networks in each of said categories for the night. Lead-out "Psych" then drew 3.8 million viewers, including 600,000 adults 18-34 - also a basic cable best on Friday.

Compared with their respective openers this past summer, "Monk" was up 1.96% (5.1 million on 7/7/06) while "Psych" dipped a noticeable 37.70% (6.1 million, also on 7/7/06).

Meanwhile over on sister channel Sci Fi, "The Dresden Files" averaged a 1.37 household rating for its premiere, including 882,000 adults 18-49 and 1,005,000 adults 25-54, while "Battlestar's" return drew a 1.39 household rating, including 1,255,000 adults 18-49 and 1,293,000 adults 25-54. "Dresden" also built significantly from its movie lead-in, a repeat of "Final Destination" (0.72 household rating, 479,000 adults 18-49, 434,000 adults 25-54).

Overall, "Dresden" was well short of the network's most-recent newcomers - "Eureka" (2.05 household rating, 7/18/06-10/3/06) and its "ECW" coverage (1.84 household rating, 6/14/06-1/2/07) - but ahead of the second season of "Doctor Who" (1.05 household rating, 9/29/06-12/22/06).

As for "Battlestar," said household numbers were just shy of its third season average to date (1.46 household rating, 10/6/06-12/15/06) as well as behind its season 2.5 average (1.87 household rating, 1/6/06-3/10/06) and the network's two "Stargate" series - "SG-1" (1.54 household rating, 7/14/06-9/22/06) and "Atlantis" (1.42 household rating, 7/14/06-9/22/06).
