|
LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:
Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!
BAD TASTE IN MEN (ABC, New!) - Austin Weinberg ("Jake in Progress") has landed a potential comedy at the Alphabet about "a Chicago woman who's been unable to find the right guy and settle down." The single-camera half-hour comes from ABC Studios with Weinberg, Brillstein Entertainment Partners's Peter Traugott, Untitled Entertainment's Dannielle Thomas and Fedora Films's Jennifer Love Hewitt and A.J. Rinella executive producing, the latter of which has a first-look deal with the studio.
THE CLIENT LIST (Lifetime) - Jordan Budde ("90210") is developing a series version of the Jennifer Love Hewitt-led telefilm, about a Texas housewife who becomes a prostitute. Said effort "will offer a new take on the idea," while Hewitt presumably won't reprise her role. She will however executive produce alongside her Fedora Films partner A.J. Rinella as well as Untitled Entertainment's Dannielle Thomas and Jaffe/Braunstein Films's Howard Braunstein.
DEALBREAKER (ABC, New!) - Nahnatchka Khan ("American Dad") has booked a second potential comedy, this time at ABC. Said half-hour is based on Dave Horwitz and Marisa Pinson's blog-turned-novel of the same name, a "hilarious reference guide to the qualities that, when discovered, transform the 'date you hope to go home with' into the 'date you pray never calls again.'" Khan will co-write the 20th Century Fox Television-based project, which has a script commitment with penalty attached should it not go to pilot, alongside Laura McCreary. Ted Field and Mike Weber of Radar Pictures, who originally optioned the book's rights, will also serve as executive producers.
EXIT 19 (Lifetime) - Ally Walker ("Sons of Anarchy") has been tapped for the lead role in the drama pilot, about single mother Gloria Shepherd "as she juggles her demanding personal and professional lives raising two children while working as a New York Police Department homicide detective." She'll take over for Geena Davis, who originated the character in CBS's 2008 pilot. Jeffrey Bell is behind the hour, which comes from ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios.
GOOD GUYS, BAD HUSBANDS (ABC, New!) - Steve Leff ("Roommates") has booked a new comedy at the Alphabet about inept dads. Said half-hour is set up at Jordan Levin's Generate banner with Leff and Levin executive producing. No other details were given.
THE LYING GAME (ABC Family) - Alexandra Chando (TheWB.com's "Rockville CA") has scored the lead role in the drama pilot, about Emma, "a kind-hearted foster kid who can't catch a break. She finds out she has an identical twin sister, Sutton, who - unlike Emma - was adopted by wealthy parents and is seemingly living an ideal life. After their initial meeting, Sutton talks Emma into stepping into her life for a few days while she pursues a lead on their birth mother. Initially excited to do this favor for her sister, Emma soon learns that Sutton has gone missing and could be in trouble. Now, Emma must decide whether to come clean to Sutton's family and risk her own safety in the hope of uncovering her twin sister's true whereabouts, along with the truth about why they were separated in the first place." Charles Pratt, Jr. is behind the Warner Horizon Television/Alloy Entertainment-produced hour, which is based on Sara Shepard's upcoming novel of the same name. Mark Piznarski directs.
OFF THE MAP (ABC) - Executive producer Shonda Rhimes has posted on her Twitter page that the medical drama, about "a tiny town in the South American jungle which has one understaffed, under-stocked medical clinic," will premiere Wednesday, January 12 at 10:00/9:00c. Valerie Cruz, Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Mamie Gummer and Martin Henderson are among the show's ensemble, which added Jonathan Castellanos, Zach Gilford and Rachelle Lefevre over the summer.
ONE POLICE PLAZA (ABC, New!) - Linda Fairstein ("Final Jeopardy") and Ken Solarz ("CSI: NY") are developing a new drama at the Alphabet about New York City's first female commissioner. No other plot details were given about the project, which is set up at ABC Studios. Mark Gordon and Deborah Spera are also on board to executive produce via their studio-based The Mark Gordon Company.
ROOKIE BLUE (ABC) - Camille Sullivan has joined the cast of the show's upcoming second season. She'll play detective Jo Rosati on the series, which is expected to air next summer. Also signing on: Lauren Holly as an unspecified guest star. Missy Peregrym, Gregory Smith, Charlotte Sullivan, Enuka Okuma and Travis Milne co-star in the drama, which is executive produced by Tassie Cameron, Ilana Frank, Noreen Halpern, John Morayniss and David Wellington.
SWITCHED AT BIRTH (ABC Family) - D.W. Moffet, Vanessa Marano and Lucas Grabeel have all joined the cast of the drama pilot, which "tells the story of two teen girls who discover that they were accidentally switched at birth. Bay Kennish grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and two brothers, while Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing as a child due to a case of meningitis, grew up with a single mother in a poor neighborhood. Things come to a dramatic head when both families meet and struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls." Marano will play Bay with Moffett and the previously cast Lea Thompson as her parents while Grabeel is set as one of her brothers. Constance Marie and Katie Leclerc also star in the hour, from creator Lizzy Weiss.
TERRA NOVA (FOX) - Christine Adams ("The Whole Truth") has booked the final principal role on the upcoming drama, about "an ordinary family embarking on an incredible journey back in time to prehistoric Earth as a small part of a massive experiment to save the human race." The series centers on the Shannon family (Jason O'Mara and Shelley Conn as the parents; Alana Mansour, Landon Liboiron and Naomi Scott as the kids) as they join the tenth pilgrimage of settlers to Terra Nova, the first colony of humans in this second chance for civilization. Adams will play the leader of another, renegade colony near Terra Nova. Allison Miller, Mido Hamada and Stephen Lang also star in the project, which begins production this month.
TINY MONSTERS (FOX, New!) - Ali Rushfield ("In the Motherhood") is developing a new animated comedy at the network about "a group of mean girls in junior high." Said effort comes from Jack Black's Reveille-based Electric Dynamite banner with the company's Ben Cooley and Priyanka Mattoo likewise executive producing alongside Reveille's Carolyn Bernstein. 20th Century Fox Television is the studio attached.
UNTITLED JULIE GOLDEN PROJECT (NBC, New!) - Julie Golden ("Caesars 24/7") has landed a script order from the Peacock for a potential drama centering "on the world of a chef and his dysfunctional family." The untitled hour, from Warner Bros. Television and executive producers Sheldon Turner and Jennifer Klein, "will revolve around a San Francisco chef who's on the cusp of joining the ranks of celebrity chefs -- but whose life is upended when his ex-wife dies and his daughters move in."
UNTITLED TIFFANY PAULSON PROJECT (FOX, New!) - Actress/feature writer Tiffany Paulson ("Nancy Drew") has scored a script commitment from the network for "a romantic comedy told from the P.O.V. of a career-driven woman." Walt Becker and Dana Dubois are also on board to executive produce the single-camera project, which likewise comes from Fedora Films's Jennifer Love Hewitt and A.J. Rinella. It's not clear which studio is attached.
VINES (NBC, New!) - Mark Kruger ("The 4400"), Michael Aguilar ("Constantine") and Hideo Nakata ("The Ring") are set to team for a potential drama at the Peacock about "a troubled family desperate for a fresh start that takes over a Napa Valley winery whose ancient vines possess dangerous mystical powers." Kruger is penning the Universal Media Studios-based hour, which was originally developed as a feature. He'll then executive produce alongside Aguilar and Nakata, the latter of which may direct, for Dos Tontos and OZLA Pictures.
