|
LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:
Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!
THE BIG C (Showtime) - Jenny Bicks has inked a two-year, seven-figure overall deal with Sony Pictures Television. The pact covers her showrunning duties on the Laura Linney-led series for the foreseeable future, as well as any future development. Already in the works is "Modern Love," about the fictionalized male editor of The New York Times column of the same name. Said half-hour was previously set up at HBO in 2009 but has subsequently been redeveloped by Lifetime. It's not clear if producer BermanBraun or director Alan Poul are still attached.
COURTROOM 302 (ABC) - Steven Maeda ("Miami Medical") has inked a blind two-script deal with ABC Studios. He'll also potentially supervise other projects at the studio. Most recently, Maeda penned "Courtroom 302" for ABC and The Mark Gordon Company, which is likewise based at ABC Studios. Said hour, based on Steve Bogira's book of the same name, revolved around Chicago's Cook County Criminal Courthouse, the busiest felony courthouse in the country.
HERD MENTALITY (CBS) - Co-star Danny Comden has likewise booked a blind script commitment from the pilot's producer, CBS Television Studios-based The Tannenbaum Company. Damon Wayans and Eliza Dushku also star in the pilot, set behind the scenes of a sports radio show. Bill Martin and Mike Schiff co-wrote the half-hour, to be directed by Andy Cadiff.
THE INBETWEENERS (MTV) - The U.K. import has received a series commitment, as the cable channel has ordered 12 episodes for a likely debut in 2012. Alex Frnka, Bubba Lewis, Joey Pollari, Mark L. Young and Zack Pearlman star in the half-hour, about four high school boys who are not the most popular but not geeky enough to be branded uncool. Brad Copeland penned the pilot, directed by Taika Waititi, and is executive producing alongside Aaron Kaplan and original series creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris. Other upcoming scripted originals include "Teen Wolf," "Death Valley," "This Is Awkward" (formerly "That Girl") and "I Just Want My Pants Back" as well as revivals of "Beavis and Butthead" and the FOX pilot "Good Vibes."
SECRET FORTUNE (CBS, New!) - Nigel Lythgoe ("American Idol") has booked a pilot at the Eye for a potential game show based on the U.K.'s "high-stakes and emotion-charged studio quiz show" of the same name. Said effort sees "paired contestants compete by correctly answering questions to eliminate twenty-three Secret Fortune envelopes" - the last of which may contain a measly or life-altering sum. Nick Knowles hosts the British incarnation, known as "The National Lottery Secret Fortune," which drew nearly seven million viewers for its premiere last month. Lythgoe's Big Red 2 Entertainment is behind the project, which he'll executive produce alongside Phil Morrow of Wild Rover Productions.
THE TRANSPORTER (Cinemax) - The small screen take on the Jason Statham-led film franchise has found a home at the pay channel. Lagardere Entertainment and Luc Besson's EuropaCorp are behind the series, which has a 12-episode commitment. Klaus Zimmermann, CEO of Atlantique Production, will oversee production the $48 million-production, due to begin filming later this year in Europe and Canada. Besson and Fred Fuchs will also serve as executive producers.
