LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

ALCATRAZ (FOX) - Jack Bender ("Lost") has been tapped as an executive producer on the midseason drama. There he'll serve as in-house director on the series, the pilot of which was helmed by Danny Cannon. Elizabeth Sarnoff, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk also serve as executive producers.
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (CBS) - Martin Short is set to recur on the show's upcoming season. He'll play the new boss of Jason Segel's character at an environmental law firm, a post previously held by Dave Foley. With the latter co-starring in "How to Be a Gentleman," producers had to find a different actor to fill the void.
MORE AS THIS STORY DEVELOPS (HBO) - Dev Patel ("Slumdog Millionaire") has joined the cast of the Aaron Sorkin-penned drama pilot. He'll join the previously cast Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, Sam Waterston and Olivia Munn in the hour, which is set in the world of cable news. No details about his character however were given. Greg Mottola is directing the pilot while Alan Poul, Scott Rudin and Sorkin are the executive producers.
THE PLAYBOY CLUB (NBC) - MyNetworkTV affiliate KMYU is set to carry the upcoming drama in the Salt Lake City market. NBC affiliate KSL previously opted to drop the series over concerns about its subject matter. "We respect the position of KSL and are pleased that KMYU can provide a home for The Playboy Club," KMYU VP/general manager Steve Carlston told TVGuide.com. "This highly anticipated crime drama will now have the opportunity to be seen by the viewers throughout (the Salt Lake City market)."
