Development Update: Monday, August 15
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

DOPE (HBO, New!) - "Mildred Pierce" director Todd Haynes and executive producers John Wells and Christine Vachon are on track to reteam for a potential drama series at the pay channel based on Sara Gran's novel about "a woman who re-enters her life after being away at the farm to treat her heroin addiction and becomes a private eye" in 1950 New York. Julianne Moore, who co-stars in the network's upcoming "Game Change," is reportedly circling the project, which Haynes would direct from a script by Gran herself. (Deadline.com)

KATE PLUS 8 (TLC) - The cable channel has passed on a third season for its "Jon and Kate Plus 8" spin-off. "TLC has decided not to renew another season of Kate + 8," the network said in a statement. "By the end of this season Kate + 8 will have hit the 150 episode mark (including Jon & Kate + 8); an exceptional milestone. TLC hopes to check in with Kate and the family periodically with specials in the future." The show's de facto swan song then is set for Monday, September 12.

TWO ROADS (ABC, New!) - "Detroit 1-8-7" alums Jason Richman and David Zabel are developing a new "Sliding Doors"-esque drama at the Alphabet about "a young woman who struggles with doubt on her wedding day whether to go through with it or not." ABC Studios is behind the hour, as result of Zabel's overall and Richman's blind script deals with the studio, which would then track both paths of the lead character. (Deadline.com)

UNTITLED JOSH BERMAN/PETER TOLAN PROJECT (ABC, New!) - "Drop Dead Diva" creator Josh Berman has booked a potential drama at the Alphabet about "a female FBI profiler who teams up with a homicide detective for the first time since he left her at the altar after coming out of the closet." Said effort, which comes from Peter Tolan and Michael Wimer's Sony Pictures Television-based Fedora Entertainment, has a penalty attached should it not go to pilot. Fellow Sony-based Berman then will write and executive produce alongside Tolan and Wilmer. (Variety.com)

UNTITLED SEAN HAYES PROJECT (NBC) - "Rescue Me" co-creator Peter Tolan is reportedly close to signing onto the network's proposed Sean Hayes-led comedy, which would revolves around two gay men tasked with raising a 12-year-old. Tolan would pen the half-hour and executive produce alongside his and Michael Wimer's Sony Pictures Television-based Fedora Entertainment. Universal Media Studios is also co-producing. (EW.com)

AND IN OTHER NEWS... - Actress/writer Paula Pell ("30 Rock") has been tapped as Ron Swanson's mother on "Parks & Recreation" (TVLine.com); Jessy Schram ("Falling Skies") will play Cinderella on ABC's "Once Upon a Time" with David Anders ("The Vampire Diaries") as a doctor who dates Ginnifer Goodwin's Snow White (Zap2It.com); "America's Got Talent" host Nick Cannon will recur on NBC's "Up All Night" as Calvin, "the wildly popular co-host to talk show star Ava (Maya Rudolph), who can't help but be jealous of the attention her energetic sidekick receives," with Jennifer Hall ("Nip/Tuck") also on board as Missy, Ava's "insecure (and not quite respected) assistant" (TVGuide.com); plus Cassidy Freeman ("Smallville") will turn up on NBC's "The Playboy Club" as Frances Dunhill, a Chicago socialite who begins a faux relationship with Nick Dalton (Eddie Cibrian) that benefits them both (TVLine.com).
