Los Angeles, CA, April 20, 2012- It's every traveler's worst nightmare - a picturesque vacation turned deadly in the blink of an eye. In the one-hour special "Death In Paradise," E! presents exclusive interviews and rare footage that examine four different exotic vacations that ended in tragedy - and reveals the dubious controversy that surrounded each case. From drug cartels, to love triangles and broken dreams, "Death In Paradise," is a jaw-dropping look at vacations gone terribly wrong. The special premieres on April 23 at 10:00 pm ET/PT on E!
Highlighted in the one-hour special is the headline-making, international story surrounding the murder of Monica Beresford Redman, who died while vacationing in Mexico. As a result, her husband, Bruce, is currently in Mexican jail awaiting trial for the crime of aggravated homicide. He maintains his innocence. When these events transpired they made national headlines as Bruce is a well-known Hollywood producer with credits including "Survivor" and "The Contender." Monica's sister, Carla, shares with E! her recollections of her sister's marriage and the horrific moment when she learned of her death. "They found her body... I was screaming in the street. It was awful." Bruce's parents, who are currently the custodians of Monica and Bruce's young children, reveal to E! the moment when Bruce was taken into custody, "when the marshall's arrived, Bruce could absolutely make no phone calls. My heart just dropped and then I thought 'Oh my God, what am I going to tell the children?'"
For Marie and Dan Sumnicht, their then 21-year-old daughter Julia was a driven and goal-oriented college student with a life-long aspiration of becoming a model. However, according to police, after a night of partying on spring break, a friend found her unresponsive and called 911. She was later pronounced dead. "I don't believe that Julia would ever take GHB. She always wanted to be safe. I mean Julia had a future. She just wouldn't take that drug. It wouldn't be worth it to her," explained Marie Sumnicht.
Dr. Betzy Salcedo and her husband, Bobby, were more in love than ever. Having just renewed their wedding vows while on vacation in Mexico, they headed out on the town with family and friends. While at a bar, the couple was caught in the middle of a kidnapping spree. In a classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, Bobby's vacation came to an end as he was snatched, right in front of his wife's eyes, and later found... shot execution style by drug cartel members. "I was in complete shock. I wasn't even crying. I was just, 'what am I gonna do?'" explained Dr. Betzy Salcedo.
Robyn Gardner was a beautiful 35-year old woman who needed a vacation. Struggling with her career and supposedly involved in a love triangle, a trip to Aruba was just the ticket. She went off scuba diving with her friend, Gary Giordano, and never came back. Giordano has never been charged with any wrong-doing and asserts that he does not know exactly what happened to Robyn. Robyn's sweetheart back home, Richard Forester, speaks to E! about what he thinks really happened out on the tropical island.
With first- hand accounts from the loved ones left behind and the criminal investigators and attorneys involved with the cases, the E! Entertainment Special "Death In Paradise" is a fascinating look at some of the most unexpected vacation tragedies. The E! Entertainment Special "Death In Paradise" airs on April 23 at 10:00 pm ET/PT only on E!
