Mary Carillo Profiles Olympic Hopeful Oscar Pistorius, Kate Snow Revisits Soccer Concussions in High School Girls, and More
May 31, 2012 - New York, NY - When "Rock Center with Brian Williams" returns on Thursday, June 7 at 10p/9c, its time slot this summer and into the fall, the newsmagazine will do what it does best - profile remarkable people and deliver groundbreaking stories that touch lives.
Esteemed sportscaster and former professional tennis player Mary Carillo will tell the story of Oscar Pistorius, often referred to as the Blade Runner. A world champion sprinter who is likely to be one of the biggest stories of the upcoming London Olympics; he is the embodiment of Life Without Limitations. A double amputee, Pistorius is the first ever Paralympian to win Gold in each of the 100m, 200m and 400m sprints (Beijing 2008) and his international reputation as the "fastest man on no legs" is gaining momentum with every race. Now he intends to go head-to-head with able-bodied runners in the 400m, on the biggest stage on earth. Carillo sits down with Pistorius to talk about the challenges he's overcome on the road to the 2012 London games.

In response to the overwhelming reaction to our report on concussions among high school girls playing soccer, "Rock Center's" Kate Snow goes to New Jersey, Florida, Texas and California to dig deeper into the danger, and the psyche of these young girls and their families. Many have responded to the risk by wearing special headgear advertised as protecting against concussions, but Snow discovers that the reality may be very different. It's a piece of reporting no parent should miss.

Brian Williams meets with the children and teachers of the highly successful Harlem Village Academies and sits down with Deborah Kenny, the founder of the school, to discuss her new book, Born to Rise.

Chicago's 'Loop' is about to get colorful. Chicago based multimedia artist Jessica Stockholder has been commissioned by the Chicago Loop Alliance to install Color Jam, a public art project that allows Stockholder to "paint" the city. 76,000 square-feet of colored vinyl will be placed in the busy intersection of State and Adams and will remain up through September. Enough vinyl to make 50,000 records, Stockholder and her team will use 10-story boom lifts to install the installation and Rock Center will see Stockholder "paint" the city full of color from start to finish. And when it's finished, everything from the lampposts to the building facades and sidewalks will be awash in color.
