PaleyFest: Made in NY Orange Is the New Black Wednesday, October 2, 2013 8:30 pm ET 25 West 52nd St New York

IN PERSON Jenji Kohan Piper Kerman Taylor Schilling Jason Biggs Natasha Lyonne Kate Mulgrew Danielle Brooks Uzo Aduba Taryn Manning

The Netflix Original Series Orange Is the New Black has rapidly become one of the most talked about and critically adored series on television (the San Francisco Chronicle called it "a new definition of television excellence"). The comedic prison drama, with its novel setting, cast of richly diverse and multidimensional characters, and ability to seamlessly blend intense drama and no-holds-barred comedy, has been met with rapturous response by fans of challenging, quality television (it's also more addictive than chocolate). Viewers follow Piper Chapman's (Taylor Schilling) journey from privileged, happily engaged urbanite to overwhelmed inmate after a youthful indiscretion catches up with her and she must serve time in a federal women's prison; through her eyes, the audience navigates the surprisingly complex prison world, confronting issues of race, class, sexuality, and religion while being richly entertained by the compellingly fleshed out characters and countless did-you-see-it moments built for a social TV world. The Paley Center is delighted to welcome OITNB's creator and executive producer, Jenji Kohan, members of the phenomenal cast, and Piper Kerman, author of the memoir that served as the basis for the show, to discuss the production of this remarkable new series, which is filmed on stages in New York City.

PaleyFest: Made in NY Person of Interest Thursday, October 3, 2013 6:30pm ET 25 West 52nd St New York

IN PERSON Jonathan Nolan Jim Caviezel Michael Emerson Kevin Chapman Sarah Shahi Moderator: Matt Roush, Senior Critic, TV Guide Magazine

Actors Jim Caviezel, Michael Emerson, and creator/exec producer Jonathan Nolan are among the people of interest who make CBS's Person of Interest one of the most provocative shows on television, assuming even greater relevance in the wake of recent revelations of massive government surveillance programs. Now in its third season, the series - created by Nolan (whose screenplays include Memento and the two Dark Knight movies, both directed by his brother Christopher) from a script he cowrote with TV uber-auteur J.J. Abrams - stars Caviezel as Reese, a presumed-dead former CIA agent who teams up with the mysterious billionaire Finch (Emerson) to thwart violent crimes that Finch's software invention has identified as about to happen (Time magazine calls them "quasi-legal vigilantes - using power to achieve a definite good, saving the lives of the innocent). Though typically classified as a crime show - TV Guide praised it as a "rare crime drama that revels in actual mystery, it's dark, paranoid tone embodied by two damaged heroes" - Nolan himself told a San Diego Comic Con audience over the summer that he is "unabashed about the fact that it's a science fiction show." When news broke this year of PRISM and other real-life government surveillance programs, television critics were quick to draw analogies to Finch's invention, The Machine, and Nolan responded by saying, "Now that reality has caught up to us, we aim to push a little further in the third season out into that [science-fiction] space." Critics have lauded Person of Interest not only for its riveting, thought-provoking concept, but also its artful depiction of a post-9/11 universe and its splendidly nuanced characterizations. The series, which films on location in New York City, also stars Taraji P. Henson and Kevin Chapman as New York coppers, plus Amy Acker and Sarah Shahi, both joining the regular cast this season. Joining Nolan and Abrams as exec producers are Greg Plageman and Bryan Burk.

PaleyFest: Made in NY The Americans Friday, October 4, 2013 6:30 pm ET 25 West 52nd St New York

IN PERSON Joe Weisberg Joel Fields Keri Russell Matthew Rhys Noah Emmerich Moderator: Matt Zoller Seitz, TV Critic, NYMag.com

Even in the age of the conflicted hero, FX's The Americans is impressively bold: the series stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as - get this - a pair of undercover Soviet agents, clandestinely plying their trade while posing as travel agents in suburban Washington, D.C., during the Reagan eighties. Recipient of the Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding New Program, The Americans was created by Joe Weisberg - himself a former CIA agent. The series crackles with all the suspense inherent in the genre, but as fellow executive producer/showrunner Joel Fields says, "The Americans is at its core a marriage story; international relations is just an allegory for human relations." Elizabeth and Philip navigate not only their own marriage - arranged by the KGB - but also relationships with their two young children, based completely on lies since neither of them knows anything about their parents' true identities. Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Philip constantly sneak out in service of the motherland, committing acts so treacherous that we, as viewers, are confronted with "TV's deepest moral dilemma since The Sopranos," as the St. Louis Post Dispatch sees it. Complicating matters even further: FBI Agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich), ostensibly the good guy, who just so happens to be the Jennings's next-door neighbor, is engaging in questionable behavior of his own - possibly about to get much worse. Though set in Washington, D.C., the series films on location in the City and at stages in Brooklyn.

PaleyFest: Made in NY Elementary Saturday, October 5, 2013 6:00 pm ET 25 West 52nd St New York

IN PERSON Jonny Lee Miller Lucy Liu Aidan Quinn Jon Michael Hill Rob Doherty, Executive Producer Carl Beverly, Executive Producer Craig Sweeny, Executive Producer Moderator: Bruce Fretts, Articles Editor, TV Guide Magazine

The most influential of all fictional crime solvers, Sherlock Holmes, has found a home in modern day New York, and it suits him to a tee. The highest rated new series of the 2012-13 television season, CBS's Elementary, created by Rob Doherty, seamlessly blends Arthur Conan Doyle's celebrated creation into a contemporary police procedural format. Jonny Lee Miller portrays a recovering addict with brilliant and methodical powers of deduction, helping the NYPD crack their most difficult cases with the nimble assistance of Joan Watson (Lucy Liu). Bringing a bit of urban smarts to the table is Captain Gregson (Aidan Quinn), a character mirroring an inspector introduced in A Study in Scarlet whom Holmes deemed "the smartest of the Scotland Yarders," who doesn't always understand the super sleuth's systematic approach, but whose department reaps the benefits of his genius. This eclectic team of crime fighters is rounded out by Detective Marcus Bell (Jon Michael Hill), a top-notch investigator with sharp intuition and formidable interrogation skills.

PaleyFest: Made in NY The Outs Saturday, October 5, 2013 8:30 pm ET 25 West 52nd St New York

IN PERSON Adam Goldman Sasha Winters Hunter Canning Tommy Heleringer Jay Gillespie, Director of Photography Doug Anderson, Sound Designer Special Guests: Dylan Marron Madeline Wise Moderator: John Cameron Mitchell

From the creative mind of actor-director-writer Adam Goldman (and thanks to crowd-funding from a Kickstarter campaign), comes one of the Internet's most welcome original series, The Outs. Focusing on a pair of exes who are cautiously navigating the difficult and not always fulfilling world of dating and occasional random hook-ups, the series has garnered a devout following for its droll look at contemporary gay life among Brooklyn-based twentysomethings who aren't quite as hip to the ways of the world as they'd like to be. Joining Goldman in the search for romantic bliss are his writing partner, Sasha Winters, as his often caustically outspoken best friend Oona, and Hunter Canning, as his one-time partner Jack, whom he finds it not so easy to break away from. Interview Magazine declared, "The most accurate and essentially human portrayal of young gay men today can be found on the Net, not the networks." As an added attraction, the evening will include the debut of an episode of Goldman's newest series, Whatever this is., which he created with director of photography Jay Gillespie. Asking the universal question, "How long are you expected to do work that you hate, for pennies, until it becomes something that you love that pays the rent?," Whatever this is. follows three struggling roommates - two production assistants and a teacher - as they seek employment or bounce from one low or unpaid gig to the next. Along with Canning, the other stars of the show, Dylan Marron and Madeline Wise, will be on hand.

PaleyFest: Made in NY Nurse Jackie Sunday, October 6, 2013 4:00pm ET 25 West 52nd St New York

IN PERSON Edie Falco Merritt Wever Anna Deavere Smith Adam Ferrara Betty Gilpin Richie Jackson and Clyde Phillips, Executive Producers Moderator: Debra Birnbaum, President & Editor-in-Chief, TV Guide Magazine

In Showtime's hit comedy series Nurse Jackie, the staff at New York's All Saints Hospital knows a thing or two about pain, whether it comes to healing patients or coping with their own personal demons; none more so than Jackie Payton. A recovering addict, the hard-edged Jackie walks a daily high wire consisting of butting heads with hospital administration, coping with an ever-collapsing family life, and saving lives by whatever means necessary, all the while struggling with sliding back into her unsavory ways. Edie Falco's astonishing, Emmy-winning performance sets the tone for this dark, funny view of our flawed medical system. Surrounding her are a colorful array of sharply defined characters, including Jackie's upbeat "protégé" Zoey Barkow (Merritt Wever); smug, Ivy League doctor Fitch Cooper (Peter Facinelli); Jackie's new love interest, Officer Frank Verelli (Adam Ferrara), by-the-book administrator Gloria Akalitus (Anna Deavere Smith), and newcomer to the ER, Dr. Carrie Roman (Betty Gilpin).

PaleyFest: Made in NY Boardwalk Empire Sunday, October 6, 2013 6:30 pm ET 25 West 52nd St New York

IN PERSON Terence Winter, Executive Producer and Creator Howard Korder (writer) Michael Kenneth William Gretchen Mol Jeffrey Wright Moderator: Alan Sepinwall, TV Critic, Hitfix.com; Author, The Revolution Was Televised

For three seasons Boardwalk Empire has brought the rivalries and turf wars of Prohibition-era Atlantic City to vivid, bloody life. The series's dazzling production values and cinematic flair are a testament to the creative team working throughout the five boroughs of New York City - because not a frame of the series has been shot in New Jersey. The fourth season, set in 1924, promises more gangland conflicts for political fixer Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) as new business opportunities emerge in Florida. According to showrunner Terence Winter, the embattled Nucky will emerge "a much more shrewd gangster" as a violent and charismatic rival from Harlem, Valentin Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright), tries to usurp Chalky White's (Michael Kenneth Williams) reign as leader of Atlantic City's African-American community. Creator and executive producer Terence Winter, along with key members of the cast, will preview a new episode and discuss how HBO's Boardwalk Empire interweaves historical and fictional characters in its complex tapestry of 1920s America. The series has received many honors, including a dozen Emmys and two Golden Globes.
