DISCOVERY NETWORKS INTERNATIONAL EMBARKS ON AN EPIC VOYAGE TO PRESENT THE "WORLD'S BIGGEST SHIP"
(Silver Spring, MD - October 4, 2013) - Discovery Networks International, in partnership with Maersk Line, follows the creation of the WORLD'S BIGGEST SHIP, from design to maiden voyage, in a brand new series premiering across Discovery's international portfolio of networks. Initially premiering in the UK, WORLD'S BIGGEST SHIP will roll out internationally in more than 220 countries and territories across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America beginning this month.
The world's largest ship, built by Maersk Line, is the first ever 400m long Triple-E container vessel, 40% larger than any in existence. It is longer than four football pitches, heavier than 55 nuclear submarines and can carry more than 300 million bottles of wine. Transporting everything from cars to food, to trainers between the world's busiest port in Hong Kong, to the largest port in Rotterdam, this wonder of the ocean changes the face of global shipping forever.
Produced by Windfall Films, WORLD'S BIGGEST SHIP (6x60) will document every stage of the historic build, charting the epic battle to construct the ship through the eyes of the pioneering ship builders in South Korea and using stunning 3D CGI animations to reveal the process. From the design of the Triple-E's unique hull, to the construction of her enormous engines and propellers and state of the art safety systems, to the ship's first passage on the Asia-Europe route, all aspects of the journey have been captured.
WORLD'S BIGGEST SHIP also focuses on the human side of the Triple-E's development. The stories of the people involved with the ship's creation will be told, including the naval architect, members of the site team supervising the build and the Captain as he trains for his new role and eventually sails the first Triple-E on its maiden voyage.
"The Triple-E is an exceptional ship, in terms of its size as well as its energy saving technology and design," says Morten Engelstoft, Chief Operating Officer, Maersk Line. "We're excited about these vessels and proud to have Discovery as a partner for showing how it is built and the people and passion behind it."
"Discovery always delivers a unique and exclusive perspective on the world's most ambitious engineering projects and building the world's largest ship is no exception," says Dan Korn, SVP and Head of Programming, Discovery Networks Western Europe. "The Triple-E's scale is unprecedented and we're excited our audience will be able see this mighty ship being built and launched on Discovery."
"Capturing the sheer size and scale of the Triple-E has been a unique challenge for Windfall Films and we are delighted with the resulting series, which charts the amazing feats of engineering involved in the creation of this record-breaking vessel through the lives of a core group of incredible characters," says Carlo Massarella, Executive Producer, Windfall Films. "It's a great example of the character driven observational documentaries for which Windfall is becoming increasingly well known."
