"On the Record" goes behind the scenes with "Nashville's" music supervisor Frankie Pine, songwriter Jeffrey Steele and the song's performer Charles Esten as they discuss this week's featured song, "This Time." During this week's webisode, fans get a sneak peak as artists and longtime friends, Jeffrey Steele and Charles Esten discuss their history as friends, collaborators and most recently, Esten's opportunity to cover one of Steele's songs in this week's episode of "Nashville."
"I write a lot of songs with Chip, too. Chip is at my studio a lot and we write a lot together," said Steele.
"I've been writing music for a long time, all the way back to high school and college, all the time I've been an actor I've kept up with song writing. I was driving around LA and I heard on the radio station about this guy Jeffrey Steele that was performing that night in Hollywood at a small club. I was blown away by his talent, by his songwriting. He is the essence to me of a Nashville songwriter," shared Esten.
"The moment Buddy and I heard it we immediately loved it. It's one of those songs that you put on your favorite list and wait for the right story to come along. When we came across the scene with Rayna and Deacon writing the song I kind of thought, this is the song that's gonna give them hope, maybe they'll connect and get back together," said Pine.
"I get to be the guy that performs that [song] with Connie Britton and more than that I get to pretend I wrote it!" added Esten.
