Eighth Annual Jimmy V Week Raises Record $2.2 Million for Cancer Research
Eight-year total reaches $10.5 million mark
ESPN's 2014 Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research raised a record-setting $2,232,000 for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, surpassing the previous fundraising record of $1.8 million set in 2013. In eight years, Jimmy V Week has raised $10.5 million for cancer research.
"We are once again extremely grateful for the outpouring of support during V Week," said Susan Braun, chief executive officer of The V Foundation. "More than 5,900 donors contributed to the effort - a testament to the incredible reach and energy that ESPN brings to the table. With 100 percent of all donations going directly to cancer research, the campaign will help get us that much closer to our ultimate goal stopping cancer."
Jimmy V Week ran from Dec. 3-9, 2014 and featured a simulcast of Jim Valvano's iconic 1993 ESPYS speech across all ESPN domestic networks, a slate of public service announcements, as well as special content and messaging to drive donations.
This year for the first time V Week received donations in advance of the Jimmy V Men's and Women's Classics basketball events from supporters including: Corona, Universal's Unbroken, Vs. Cancer Foundation, The Louisville Friends of the V and the New York City Marathon's 'Team V,' totaling more than $500,000.
ESPN also ran a sweepstakes benefiting The V Foundation, which featured a grand prize trip to the College Football Playoff National Championship, as well as a host of other ESPN special packages.
"As the late Stuart Scott reminded us: 'Our life's journey is really about the people who touch us,' and ESPN is proud to share the many stories of inspiration and hope during V Week," said Kevin Martinez, vice president of corporate outreach. "It's these stories that remind us why raising money for The V Foundation is so critical - it's making a real difference to millions fighting cancer."
