New York, NY - November 10, 2016 - MTV today announced the premiere of "Transformation," a one-hour documentary about Los Angeles-based transgender and gender non-conforming youth, on Thursday, November 17 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. The latest film from the "MTV Docs" division is part of MTV's Transgender Awareness Week programming, beginning Monday, November 14 through Sunday, November 20, in which the network will spotlight diverse trans and gender non-conforming young people, as well as connect audiences with ways to be an ally to the community.
"Transformation" follows Madin Lopez, a young gender non-conforming hair stylist and their organization ProjectQ, which provides hair styling and mentoring to help youth combat bullying, develop life skills and embrace their inner beauty and identity. In the film, Madin joins the Los Angeles LGBT Center to humanize issues that trans youth face including homelessness, employment and emerging gender identities. The documentary highlights the real stories of six trans and gender non-conforming youth as they receive makeovers and mentorship from Madin and a team that includes renowned trans make-up artist, Cetine Dale, and expert fashion stylist, Lindsay Albanese. During their makeovers, Ashton, Carman, Ashleah, Milo, Jessica-Jean and Zander share their own stories as they come to celebrate their true identities.
MTV will premiere "Transformation" at the Los Angeles LGBT Center on Tuesday, November 15 with a screening for local LGBTQ young people as well as a panel discussion on 'The Future of Trans Images in the Media' featuring trans actresses Jen Richards ("Her Story," "Nashville"), Alexandra Grey ("Transparent," "Chicago Med"), and trans actor Elliot Fletcher ("Shameless," "The Fosters"). Tre'vell Anderson, a TV and film writer for The Los Angeles Times, will moderate the panel which also features Madin Lopez, as well as Katelyn Howes and Melissa Johnson, the filmmakers behind "Transformation."
Prior to the premiere of "Transformation," MTV will air an all-new episode of "True Life: We Are Transitioning," at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. The episode follows two couples who work to keep their romance strong while one partner in each pair transitions.
During Transgender Awareness Week, MTV's social platforms and Snapchat Discover will share original trans content, while the account logos will change to proudly display the transgender flag. "Look Different," MTV's multi-year public affairs campaign that spotlights the ever-important issues of race, gender and anti-LGBT bias, will promote resources that celebrate the rich diversity within the trans community, as well as ways to support the community. On Transgender Day of Remembrance, an annual observance to honor the memory of those lives lost in acts of anti-trans violence held on November 20, MTV's "Look Different" campaign will also host an online vigil.
