NEW YEAR, NEW SHOWS ON VICELAND
EMMY-NOMINATED NETWORK TO PREMIERE
THREE NEW SERIES AND A RETURN FOR TWO SHOWS
December 14, 2016, Brooklyn, NY - VICELAND, the cable channel from VICE Media and A+E Networks, rolls out three new series with the hot button shows "Hate Thy Neighbor" and "RISE" as well as the network's first foray into comedy series - the semi-scripted "Nirvanna The Band The Show" as well as its first acquisition in the British comedy "People Just Do Nothing." In addition, the network brings back two popular shows: "Noisey" and the second half of "F*ck, That's Delicious."
ABOUT THE NEW SHOWS
"HATE THY NEIGHBOR" (premiering MONDAY, JANUARY 9 @ 10:00 PM) - Up and coming British comedian Jamali Maddix confronts racism around the world head-on. This six-part import from VICELAND UK follows Maddix as he travels the globe, hoping to make sense of the growing resurgence in "right-wing"/"alt. right"/"national socialist" beliefs. His journeys take him to Sweden where he meets with the Aryan group Nordic Youth, radicals in Israel, Ukraine and in his homeland immediately after the heated Brexit vote. Finally, Maddix turns his attention to the United States in this election cycle - where he comes face to face with Pennsylvania Nazis (or, rather, "national socialists") as well as Black Supremacists in New York. Each episode is framed with Maddix's comedic reflections on his experiences in a small stand-up club in London.
"RISE," premiering at the prestigious 2017 Sundance Film Festival, (Tuesday, JANUARY 27 @ 9:00 PM) is a vibrant, gripping, and immersive documentary series that takes viewers to the frontlines of global Indigenous resistance.
With two of its eight episodes chronicling the never-before-seen seeds of the historic Standing Rock Sioux protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline and the still-developing aftermath now that the cameras and celebrities have left, filmmaker Michelle Latimer and host Sarain Fox -- both Indigenous women themselves -- delve into the Indigenous resistance movement in North America to examine the social and political factors that threaten their liberation in the 21st century. "RISE" is, at once, a condemnation of colonialism and a celebration of Indigenous people worldwide.
"RISE" is produced by VICE Studio Canada, in partnership with Rogers Media and APTN.
NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW" (debuting THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2 @ 10:00PM). Imagine a comedy series that's equal parts Nathan Fielder, Larry David and Johnny Knoxville featuring a cast of thousands, all of whom are unaware they're in a TV show. Even then, you haven't quite pegged the real-world madness that is "Nirvanna The Band The Show."
From innovative comedy filmmakers Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol, "NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW," was given a special premiere screening at this year's Toronto International Film Festival and took the 2nd Place Audience Award at Austin's Fantastic Fest earlier this year. The show follows two friends who go to unnecessary extremes in the hopes of booking their band at The Rivoli, a modest Toronto rock club.
Their adventures take many forms - from sneaking a film into the Sundance Film Festival and crashing the Santa Claus Parade to disrupting the ACTUAL premiere screening of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" - the show is as unpredictable to the viewer as it is to its unwitting supporting cast.
While each episode follows the duo's harebrained schemes to get a show ... they're also filled with hilarious pop culture references and at the center - the friendship between 'Matt' and 'Jay.'
"Nirvanna the Band the Show" is a VICE Studio Canada and Rogers Media original production.
"PEOPLE JUST DO NOTHING" premieres THURSDAY, FEB 2 at 10:30PM and is VICELAND's first acquired series from Fremantle Media International and produced by Roughcut TV. From executive producer Ash Atalla ("The IT Crowd"), the mockumentary series follows a hapless crew of social dropouts running an illegal pirate radio station in West London - 'Kurupt FM.' Currently shooting its fourth season in the UK for the BBC, the show launched to critical acclaim with The Telegraph calling it "Entertaining, and absolutely of its time" while DigitalSpy.UK hailed it as "the best British comedy since 'The In-Betweeners'"
SERIES RENEWALS
In addition to new content, the network brings back its signature music program - NOISEY (returning Tuesday, January 10 at 10:00PM). Created by VICE filmmaker Andy Capper, NOISEY is considered one of the most original music documentary series on television today. Correspondent Zach Goldbaum gets a first-hand look into the most interesting music scenes in America and around the world.
Each episode of NOISEY focuses on a single city or region - from ATLANTA (featuring T.I, Young Thug, Jeezy, Migos, Lil Yachty, 21 Savage, Metro Boomin') where trends are born or NASHVILLE (featuring Kesha, JellyRoll, Margo Price, Struggle Jennings), where we meet the outlaws, outsiders and victims of the American pop music machine. Or global trips to PARIS, examining Islamaphobia through the sounds of MHD, Medine, S.Pri Noir, and Niska or SEOUL where "K-Pop" rules all (with super stars like Big Bang leading the way), while in LAGOS, Nigeria (featuring Ice Prince, Major Lazer, Tiwa Savage and White Man Periwinkle) some of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the world are producing some of its most interesting music.
Finally - the road trip of a lifetime continues with rapper, chef and all-around bon vivant Action Bronson and his pals "Big Body Bes" and "Meyhem Lauren" as the second half of "F*CK, THAT'S DELICIOUS" returns on Thursday, January 5 at 10:00PM with the crew travelling from coast to coast and finishing up in Japan - playing concerts and enjoying all manner of fine foods, wines, and herbs along the way.
