NEW BOUNDARY-BREAKING ORIGINAL SERIES "EL CHAPO" TO PREMIERE ON UNIVISION NETWORK IN APRIL 2017
'El Chapo' Marks First Co-Production Between Univision Story House and Netflix
NEW YORK, NY - JANUARY 26, 2017 - Univision Story House, the development and production arm of Univision Communications Inc (UCI), today announced that its boundary-breaking drama series "El Chapo," based on the life story of one of the world's most notorious criminals, will premiere on Univision Network in April 2017. The series marks the first co-production between Univision Story House and Netflix.
The announcement comes just days following the extradition of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán to the U.S. where the renowned Mexican drug kingpin faces a sweeping 17-count indictment in connection with his leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel, a Mexican crime syndicate.
Guzman, who has been accused by law enforcement of running the "largest drug trafficking organization in the world," has long evaded authorities. After being captured by Mexican authorities in February 2014, Guzman escaped from a maximum security Mexican prison in July 2015 by crawling through an opening in the shower of his cell block that led to a mile-long tunnel to freedom. He was recaptured nearly six months later. Guzman's extradition to the U.S. came one day before the inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States.
"This series pulls back the curtain on one of the most captivating criminals of our time by combining the world-class reporting and insights from Univision News' investigative team with an outstanding team of talented storytellers and producers," said Camila Jiménez Villa, who oversees Univision Story House in her role as President and Chief Content Officer of Fusion Media Group. "We are thrilled to be partnering with Netflix to share this boundary-breaking new series with a global audience."
