VICELAND PRESENTS SPECIAL THREE-PART MUSIC SERIES: "EARTHWORKS"

FEATURING ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, MIGUEL AND LOCAL NATIVES PREMIERING FRIDAY, JUNE 2

May 8, 2017, Brooklyn, NY - There are certain places in the world that hold special meaning to us all, whether it invokes nostalgia, a sense of heritage or it is simply the beauty of an environment that makes its mark on us forever. These are the places that need to be protected, understood and savored so that we are not the only ones to enjoy them with such intensity - they need to be preserved for future generations. Born of that notion, VICELAND, in partnership with Live Nation and Subaru of America, Inc., presents "EARTHWORKS", slated to premiere on Friday, June 2nd at 11pm. The series will be distributed digitally, exclusively by Live Nation.

VICELAND took several musicians on singular journeys to locales that are just as important to them as they are to our ecosystem - from the Amazon with Animal Collective to the avocado and butterfly farms in Mexico with Miguel and the Colorado River with Local Natives. In each of these locations, the musicians were given the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the environment and let that deep exploration inform their music and performances.

For Animal Collective's Brian Weitz the experience was the culmination of a personal goal: "For the last ten years I've been looking for ways to join my previous life in environmental policy with my current one in music. This trip and the music we created represent the most rewarding realization of that goal. There is more work to be done... " The experimental pop band known for using natural sounds ventured through the largest rainforest in the world collecting new sounds and materials, which eventually resulted in a live EP entitled Meeting Of The Waters.

Grammy Award winning R&B artist Miguel and his family headed to Mexico. On his journey alongside his father and his brother, take an investigative look at his family tree discovering along the way the music and environments that have inevitably embedded themselves in Miguel's own songwriting process. He spoke of his motivation: "The opportunity to visit some of my origins for the first time with two of the most important people in my life was enough. The fact that we'd be educated and possibly help educate others was the cherry on top. This trip means the world to me still, in that It really makes me reflect on and appreciate the journey and the sacrifice of my elders and how much of my success I owe to them, on both sides of my family."

In the last episode, indie rock band Local Natives ventured to the Colorado River, a vital source of water and power that's been cut off from the Pacific Ocean and faces massive drought. Kelcey Ayer of Local Natives said of the experience: "Growing up in Southern California, we've always been aware of our need to conserve water, but we've never asked where it comes from or how it's being used. This Viceland trip opened our eyes to the many complicated issues associated with the water we use in the Southwest, all coming from the Colorado River. Basically we're using more than is being replenished. We learned there's no easy answer, but we can only start to solve it by opening a dialogue and becoming aware."

"EARTHWORKS" was made in partnership with Live Nation.

Subaru of America, Inc. has made it possible to air this vital series of adventures on small screens nationwide.

About ANIMAL COLLECTIVE

Animal Collective is a group of friends that met and began making music together in high school. 15 years after establishing the group with a name, members Avey Tare, Deakin, Geologist and Panda Bear continue to tap into uncharted musical territory triggered by frequent line up changes, their wide range of instrumentation, and a penchant for shifting aesthetics from record to record. Their path has seen them come out of cramped concrete basement shows and forest floor sing-a-longs to immersive installations at the Guggenheim, festival headline slots and performances on national television. Their most recent studio releases, 2016's Painting With & 2017's The Painters EP, feature Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Geologist.

The music featured in Animal Collective's episode of VICELAND's Earth Works, as performed by Avey Tare and Geologist, is available on the Meeting of the Waters EP.

About MIGUEL

Miguel first hit the mainstream in 2010 with the infectious first single 'All I Want Is You,' from his major label debut album of the same name, a song which blended a stark hip-hop beat with Miguel's creamy vocals to form a sound that was absent from the radio and established Miguel as one of the most unique and soulful voices in modern R&B. The album also features 'Sure Thing,' which hit #1 on Billboard's Hip-Hop/R&B chart and second US #1 'Quickie.' Miguel's follow up was his critically-acclaimed, four-time Grammy Award nominated, sophomore album 'Kaleidoscope Dream,' which features his third US #1 hit single 'Adorn,' the intoxicating 'How Many Drinks?', 'Do You... ' and 'The Thrill.' In 2013Miguel was nominated for a total of 5 Grammy Awards. Lead single 'Adorn,' written and produced by Miguel, garnered Miguel his first Grammy Award for Best R&B Song and resided at #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hip Airplay chart for more than 23 weeks becoming the longest running #1 single in the history of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hip Airplay chart. Miguel's critically acclaimed third studio album, 'Wildheart,' was released on June 29th via ByStorm Entertainment/RCA Records and claimed the #1 spot on Billboard's R&B Albums chart for the second time and debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. The album was recently nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Urban Contemporary Album category, and its lead single 'Coffee,' was nominated in the Best R&B Song category. WILDHEART also charted on a number of 2015 year-end lists including Time Magazine's "Top 10 Best Albums" where it made #1, The New York Times' "Best Albums of 2015," Entertainment Weekly's "40 Best Albums of 2015," and SPIN's "Top 50 Best Albums of 2015." In 2017, Miguel made his acting debut in Ben Affleck's prohibition era drama, Live By Night.

About LOCAL NATIVES

In 2010, Local Natives galvanized a musical scene in Southern California, crafting a sound that they loved, and that others flocked to in turn, with the breakout success of their debut album, Gorilla Manor. The five-piece from Los Angeles featuring Taylor Rice, Kelcey Ayer, Ryan Hahn, Nik Ewing, and Matt Frazier have since created a series of different cathartic chapters informed by their constantly changing surroundings. The band's second album, 2013's brooding and lovely Hummingbird, was born out of a period of darkness, a time spanning loss, grief and change. These 30-year-old Los Angelenos had seen the world and heard its sounds, and knew, deep down, that there was more in them. And, as in the style and paths of those arcs of our heroes, when Local Natives filtered this whole new layer of influences through their spectrum, the result is an everywhere-you-turn showcase of vision and virtuosity and their grandest statement yet: their third album, Sunlit Youth.
