NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GREENLIGHTS "INSIDE THE INTERNET: 50 YEARS OF LIFE ONLINE" AND "1989: THE YEAR THAT MADE THE MODERN WORLD" TO LEAD INTO UPCOMING LIMITED SERIES, "VALLEY OF THE BOOM"

"Valley of the Boom" From Executive Producers Arianna Huffington and Showrunner Matthew Carnahan ('House of Lies') Premieres This Winter

(WASHINGTON, DC/LOS ANGELES, CA - July 25, 2018) National Geographic announced today its greenlight for two companion specials to the network's upcoming limited series, VALLEY OF THE BOOM, which tells the surprising stories of Silicon Valley's early pioneers.

Premiering in winter, the two-hour special INSIDE THE INTERNET and the six-episode mini-series, 1989: THE YEAR THAT MADE THE MODERN WORLD will provide additional background on how the Internet began to change our lives. These documentaries will take an in-depth look at these transformative moments, offering more insight to the true story behind VALLEY OF THE BOOM.

INSIDE THE INTERNET: 50 YEARS OF LIFE ONLINE will explore the ways the web has changed the very fabric of our society in the past five decades. Featuring interviews with our digital forefathers (and mothers!) as well as celebrities who've made their mark on the platform, we'll reveal the unknown baby steps, most shocking miscues and forgotten milestones that led to the creation of the information superhighway.

Featuring interviews with the founders of AOL, Craig's List, Friendster, Match.com, Buzzfeed and Tinder and with entertainers like Randy Jackson, Martha Stewart, Chuck D, Moby and more, INSIDE THE INTERNET delves into how the Internet has changed life as we know it - from the impact on our friendships, love lives, commerce and politics - and asks the question, "how did we get here?"

1989: THE YEAR THAT MADE THE MODERN WORLD is a six-part mini-series that explores the most consequential events of 1989. Each episode will examine the events brought us to today and have shaped our world in surprising ways we could have never imagined. No other year in recent history has played a more pivotal role in shaping the present; 1989 saw a rise in radicalism, the intensification of tabloid news culture, the birth of the internet, the start of extreme monetization of the media industry and diverse voices gaining unprecedented traction in pop culture - to mention just a few of the watershed moments dissected in this provocative series.

VALLEY OF THE BOOM from STXtv, stars an ensemble cast led by two-time Emmy award-winning actor Bradley Whitford ("Get Out," "The Post," "The West Wing"), Steve Zahn ("War of the Planet of the Apes," "Dallas Buyers Club") and Lamorne Morris ("Game Night," "New Girl"). Using a blend of narrative devices and interviews with the real subjects and experts woven into scripted drama, showrunner, creator, director and executive producer Matthew Carnahan ("House of Lies") charts the meteoric rise and cataclysmic burst of the dot-com bubble. From STX Entertainment, Valley of the Boom is also executive produced by Arianna Huffington and is set to premiere on National Geographic this winter.

In the series, Carnahan follows the turbulent ride of three different companies whose founders were trying to change the world using the new technology of the internet. Before Google, Netscape pioneered the first commercial web browser and launched the "browser wars" with Microsoft. Before Facebook, theglobe.com was a rapidly expanding social networking site built by dreamers on a college campus. And before YouTube, a con artist on the run from the FBI reinvented himself in Silicon Valley to start a streaming video company called Pixelon, resulting in an entrepreneurial rise and fall almost too insane to be believed.

INSIDE THE INTERNET is produced by National Geographic Studios for National Geographic. For National Geographic Studios, executive producers are Brian Lovet and Cheryl Horner. For National Geographic, executive producer is Betsy Forhan and president of original programming and production is Geoff Daniels.

1989: THE YEAR THAT MADE THE MODERN WORLD is produced by National Geographic Studios in association with the Intellectual Property Corporation for National Geographic. For IPC executive producers are Aaron Saidman, Eli Holzman and Rory Karpf. For National Geographic Studios, executive producer is Brian Lovett. For National Geographic, executive producer is Betsy Forhan and president of original programming and production is Geoff Daniels.
