Unveiling the Next Chapter in Chinese-Language Entertainment

Maya Huang

Head of Chinese-Language Content

As we kick off another thrilling year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we've been on since 2020, when we made a commitment to ramp up our Chinese-language offerings.

We've collaborated with top creators and talents in Taiwan and acquired a wide repertoire of content for Netflix. The result? A growing library of scripted and unscripted content that is capturing hearts worldwide. From the suspenseful mystery of Light the Night to the spine-chilling horror of Incantation, our local titles have resonated across cultures.

Loved on Netflix: 2023

Last year was nothing short of spectacular for Chinese-language content on Netflix. Crime thriller series Copycat Killer became one of the first few Taiwanese titles to gain a following in Europe and the Middle East. Wave Makers, a character-driven workplace dramedy, sparked real-life discussions on deep-rooted issues in Taiwan's entertainment, politics and media landscapes.

We also welcomed our first romance anthology series, At the Moment, made up of 10 unique stories that beautifully explored the multiple facets of love during the pandemic.

At the 58th Golden Bell Awards, we proudly celebrated the talent and creative excellence of our storytellers, cast and crew, where we clinched 40 nominations and 12 wins across four Taiwanese series.

This strong positive reception in 2023 reaffirmed our audience's appetite for authentic and compelling local stories, fueling our passion to bring you more this year.

Next on Netflix: 2024

As we dive into 2024, our focus is on diversifying our Chinese-language content to offer you even more entertainment options. We'll work closely with top and emerging creators and talents in Taiwan, and invest in must-watch and quality Chinese-language content, including genres that are less represented on screen, to tell stories that are impactful, relatable and authentic to audiences.

We're starting the year strong with today's release of Let's Talk About CHU, a lighthearted, thought-provoking and steamy comedy series that explores the intricacies of sex and love through the Chu family. Starring Kai Ko and Chan Tzu-hsuan, this bold series encourages open discussions about sexuality for healthier relationships.

Fans of detective series The Victims' Game, the first Chinese-language production renewed by Netflix, will be excited to know that the second season will land this year. Join Fang Yi-jen (Joseph Chang) as he becomes the prime suspect in a new murder case, risking everything to prove his innocence and rebuild his relationship with his daughter. The original cast - Joseph Chang, Hsu Wei-ning, Jason Wang, Moon Lee - along with new additions like Japanese actor Dean Fujioka, Hong Kong star Terrance Lau, and Taiwanese singer Tarcy Su, promise another gripping season.

Following the success of box office hit Marry My Dead Body, which is also Taiwan's country selection for the 2024 Academy Awards, we'll be releasing a spin-off series, GG Precinct. Greg Hsu will reprise his role as a police detective in the sequel, which boasts more mind-boggling crimes and side-splitting moments this time.

Finally, don't miss Born for the Spotlight, a riveting series starring Hsieh Ying-hsuan, Cheryl Yang and Hsueh Shih-ling. A refreshing take on the journey of a starlet and sisterhood, the series follows the unraveling of a friendship between two top actresses as they pursue their passion and navigate the cutthroat showbiz landscape in Taiwan. The series features a star-studded cast including Hsieh Ying-hsuan, Cheryl Yang, Hsueh Shih-ling, Annie Chen, Hsieh Chiung-hsuan, Yang Kuei-mei, Chung Hsin-ling, Tseng Wan-ting, Chloe Lin, Rd Huang and Zhan Huai-yun.

Beyond our local content, we know our audience also loves a mix of Hollywood and Korean content, anime, and more. In 2024, we look forward to entertaining you all with our diverse line-up of films and series. It is going to be another exhilarating year of storytelling, and we can't wait for you to unearth your new favorite stories with us.
