Quick Take for Tuesday, April 22, 2008 (Fast Affiliate Live + Same Day Ratings)

ABC Takes Second to Fox on Tuesday in Viewers and Young Adults, Marking its Strongest Adult 18-49 Performance on the Evening in 4 Weeks

For the 4th Week in a Row, ABC's "DWTS Results" is the Top Draw in its 9pm Time Slot, Leading Fox's "Idol"-Fueled "Hell's Kitchen" by 5.9 Million Viewers

Hitting Season-Highs in Viewers and Young Adults, ABC's "DWTS Results" Jumps by Over 2 Million Viewers and 11% in Adults 18-49 Week to Week

For the 5th Consecutive Week, "DWTS" is Tuesday's No. 2 Show to "Idol" in Viewers

Opposite NBC's Original "Law & Order: SVU," ABC's "Boston Legal" Earns Second In the 10 O'clock Hour, with the Series' Strongest Numbers in More than 5 Months

Tuesday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.)

ABC earned a solid second place to Fox on Tuesday evening in Total Viewers (10.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.7/7).

Growing by 1.3 million viewers and by 17% in Adults 18-49 over the previous Tuesday (9.4 million & 2.3/6), ABC garnered its highest young adult delivery in 4 weeks since 3/25/08.

"Dancing with the Stars Results" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

Building sharply on its lead-in (+13.4 million viewers and +186% in Adults 18-49), ABC's "Dancing with the Stars Results" was the most-watched show in its 9 o'clock time period for the fourth straight week. Despite Fox's decided lead-in advantage coming into to the hour from "Idol," ABC's "DWTS Results" topped Fox's "Hell's Kitchen" by 5.9 million viewers (17.5 million vs. 11.6 million). "DWTS" delivered a solid second place in Adults 18-49, defeating its CBS unscripted competition in the slot by 67% (4.0/10 vs. 2.4/6 "Big Brother 9"). Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin was the sixth celebrity dancer to be eliminated from the ABC dance competition this season. The ABC dance competition stood as Tuesday's No. 2 TV show in viewers for the fifth week in a row, behind only Fox's "American Idol."

Hitting season-highs in viewers and young adults, "DWTS Results" was up over the prior week's performance by more than 2 million viewers (17.5 million vs. 15.4 million) and by 11% in Adults 18-49 (4.0/10 vs. 3.6/8). In fact on both Nielsen measures, the show drew ABC's top numbers in the time period in 5 months since 11/27/07.

"Boston Legal" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

Opposite NBC's original "Law & Order: SVU," ABC's "Boston Legal" took second place in the 10 o'clock hour among Total Viewers (10.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.8/8).

Growing week-to-week by 1.7 million viewers (10.5 million vs. 8.8 million) and by 33% in Adults 18-49 (2.8/8 vs. 2.1/6), ABC's "Boston Legal" marked the series' best numbers since mid-November since 11/13/07.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped from over 15% at the same point in 2006-07, up to nearly 24% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
