5th WEEK IN A ROW "NIGHTLINE" BESTS "TONIGHT SHOW"

"NIGHTLINE" GROWS +5% AMONG TOTAL VIEWERS YEAR TO YEAR
WHILE "TONIGHT SHOW" DECLINES -44%
For the fifth consecutive week ABC News' "Nightline" outperformed NBC's "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" among Total Viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research for the week of July 20, 2009. This marks the first time since 1995 "Nightline" has outperformed "Tonight" five weeks in a row in Total Viewers. Additionally, "Nightline" shrank the A25-54 gap with "Tonight" by 60% compared to the same week last year. For the third week in a row, NBC's "The Tonight Show" experienced the program's lowest Total Viewer and A25-54 averages since at least the 1991/1992 season.
"Nightline" continues to experience growth season to date, quarter to date and year to year. For the 29th consecutive week, "Nightline" grew among Total Viewers. The program grew +5% versus the same week last year, while "Tonight" in comparison declined -44%.
Quarter to date, "Nightline" is in first place among Total Viewers with 3.66 million, a growth of +15% vs. 2008 quarter to date, while "Tonight" has declined -40% in Total Viewers, -21% among A25-54 and -9% among A18-49.
Season to date, "Nightline" is solidly in second place with 3.80 million Total Viewers and 1.65 million Adults 25-54. The program is up +13% among Total Viewers, +2% among Adults 25-54 and +5% among Adults 18-49.
ABC News' "Nightline" is anchored by Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Martin Bashir. John Donvan and Vicki Mabrey are correspondents. James Goldston is the executive producer. The program airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m., ET on the ABC Television Network.
