Nightline Is #1 Among Total Viewers -- Outperforms "Tonight Show" for 7th Consecutive Week

Ratings Report for ABC News' "Nightline" For the Week of August 3, 2009

"NIGHTLINE" IS #1 AMONG TOTAL VIEWERS -- OUTPERFORMS "TONIGHT SHOW" FOR 7th CONSECUTIVE WEEK

"NIGHTLINE" GROWS +10% AMONG TOTAL VIEWERS YEAR TO YEAR, WHILE "TONIGHT SHOW" DECLINES -37%

ABC News' "Nightline" was #1 among Total Viewers for the week of August 3, 2009, outperforming NBC's "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" and CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," according to Nielsen Media Research. This marks the seventh week in a row "Nightline" has outperformed "Tonight" among Total Viewers. The last time "Nightline" beat "Tonight" seven consecutive weeks was in 1995. Among Adults 25-54 and 18-49, "Nightline" outperformed "Letterman" for second place. *Note: "Letterman" aired repeats last week.

"Nightline" continues to experience growth season to date, quarter to date and year to year. For the 31st consecutive week, "Nightline" grew among Total Viewers year to year. The program grew +10% versus the same week last year, while "Tonight" in comparison declined -37%.

Quarter to date, "Nightline" is in first place among Total Viewers with 3.55 million, a growth of +15% vs. 2008 quarter to date, while "Tonight" has declined -39% in Total Viewers, -22% among A25-54 and -10% among A18-49.

Season to date, "Nightline" is solidly in second place with 3.78 million Total Viewers and 1.63 million Adults 25-54. It is up +14% in Total Viewers, +2% in A 25-54 and +5% in A18-49.

"Nightline" continues to cut the A25-54 and A18-49 gaps with NBC. "Nightline" shrank the A25-54 gap with "Tonight" by 49% and the A18-49 gap by 37% compared to the same week last year.

ABC News' "Nightline" is anchored by Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Martin Bashir. John Donvan and Vicki Mabrey are correspondents. James Goldston is the executive producer. The program airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m., ET on the ABC Television Network.
