Nightline Continues to Grow Significantly Year to Year

Ratings Report for ABC News' "Nightline" For the Week of August 17, 2009

"NIGHTLINE" CONTINUES TO GROW SIGNIFICANTLY YEAR TO YEAR: +35% AMONG TOTAL VIEWERS AND+22% AMONG A25-54

"NIGHTLINE" INCREASES +18% IN TOTAL VIEWERS THIRD QUARTER TO DATE WHILE "TONIGHT SHOW" DECLINES -40%

For the ninth consecutive week ABC News' "Nightline" outperformed NBC's "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" among Total Viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research for the week of August 17, 2009. This marks the first time since 1995 "Nightline" has outperformed "Tonight" nine weeks in a row in Total Viewers. Additionally, among Adults 18-49, "Nightline" outperformed "Letterman" for second place. NBC's "The Tonight Show," which was in repeats, experienced the program's lowest Total Viewer averages since at least the 1991/ 1992 season, which is as far back as Nielsen records date.

"Nightline" continues to experience growth season to date, quarter to date, week to week and year to year. For the 33rd consecutive week, "Nightline" grew among Total Viewers. The program increased +35% versus the same week last year. Among Adults 25-54, "Nightline" grew +22% compared to the same week last year.

Quarter to date, "Nightline" is in first place among Total Viewers with 3.51 million, a growth of +18% vs. 2008 quarter to date, while "Tonight" has declined -40% in Total Viewers, -22% among A25-54 and -11% among A18-49.

Season to date, "Nightline" is solidly in second place with 3.77 million Total Viewers and 1.62 million Adults 25-54. The program is up +14% among Total Viewers, +3% among A 25-54 and +5% among A18-49. Please note: "Nightline" is based on a four-day average, Thursday is excluded.

ABC News' "Nightline" is anchored by Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Martin Bashir. John Donvan and Vicki Mabrey are correspondents. James Goldston is the executive producer. The program airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m., ET on the ABC Television Network.
