During the week of September 17, 2012, the week prior to the official start of the television season, ABC posted its strongest week in 3 months with Total Viewers (6.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.7/5) - since w/o 6/18/12.
Monday
"CMA Music Festival: Country's Night to Rock" (8:00-11:00 p.m.)
Spiking week to week in viewers (+30% - 5.7 million vs. 4.4 million) and young adults (+36% - 1.5/4 vs. 1.1/3), opposite stiff competition from NBC's 2-hour "The Voice" leading into the series debut of "Revolution" and season/series premieres on Fox ("Bones"/"Mob Doctor"), ABC's 3-hour broadcast of the "CMA Music Festival: Country's Night to Rock" generated the Net's biggest Monday in more than 2 months - since 7/16/12.
Tuesday
"A Special Edition of 20/20" (9:00-11:00 p.m.)
Shooting up from its lead-in at 9:00 p.m. and gaining audience from its first to second hour against all-original competition on NBC ("Go On"/"The New Normal"/"Parenthood") and Fox ("So You Think You Can Dance" season finale), "A Special Edition of 20/20 - Best in TV: The Greatest TV Shows of Our Time with Barbara Walters" produced a summer high in the 2-hour time period with ABC's best non-sports results in the slot in 4 months with Total Viewers (7.5 million), Adults 18-49 (1.6/4) and Adults 25-54 (2.3/6) - since 5/22/12."I Love Lucy" won best TV show of all time.
· During its second hour from 10:00-11:00 p.m., ABC's "20/20" qualified as the most-watched program, outdrawing NBC's "Parenthood" by 2.7 million viewers (7.7 million vs. 5.0 million). In addition, the ABC newsmagazine won the 10 o'clock hour in Adults 25-54, beating the NBC first-run drama by 9% (2.4/6 vs. 2.2/5) and holding a 17% advantage with Teens 12-17 (0.7/3 vs. 0.6/3).
· Among key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54), "20/20" scored the Net's highest non-sports ratings in the time period, outside of the regular broadcast season, in 2 years - since 9/14/10.
Thursday
"Wipeout" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)
The season finale of ABC's "Wipeout" grew week to week by 11% in Total Viewers (3.9 million vs. 3.5 million) and by 9% in Adults 18-49 (1.2/4 vs. 1.1/3) against stiff competition from Fox's "The X Factor" and NBC's season premiere.
· "Wipeout" drew a 26% larger audience than NBC's sophomore season premiere of "Up All Night" (3.9 million vs. 3.1 million) from 8:30-9:00 p.m.
Friday
Featuring "Shark Tank," "What Would You Do?" and "20/20," ABC ranked No. 1 on Friday night for the 2nd week in a row among Adults 18-49 (1.5/5) and Adults 25-54 (2.0/6).
"Shark Tank" (8:00-9:01 p.m.)
Once again winning the 8 o'clock hour, ABC's "Shark Tank" stood as Friday's most-watched TV program for the 2nd straight week (6.0 million), while also finishing as the night's highest-rated program in Adults 25-54 (2.2/7).
· "Shark Tank" ranked No. 1 in its time slot in Adults 18-49 (1.6/6) for the 2nd week in a row.
"What Would You Do?" (9:01-10:00 p.m.)
ABC's "What Would You Do?" led its network rivals in the 9 o'clock hour among Adults 18-49 (1.5/5), while ranking No. 1 outright in Adults 25-54 (1.9/5) to finish as the No. 2 TV show of the night (tied with ABC's "20/20).
"20/20 (10:01-11:00 p.m.)
ABC's "20/20" was No. 1 in the 10 o'clock hour among key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54), tying "What Would You Do?" as the No. 2 TV show on Friday in the key news demo. Head to head from 10:00-11:00 p.m., ABC's "20/20" continued to beat out NBC's "Dateline" by double-digit margins in Total Viewers (+16% - 5.0 million vs. 4.3 million), Adults 25-54 (+46% - 1.9/5 vs. 1.3/4) and Adults 18-49 (+40% - 1.4/5 vs. 1.0/3). ABC's "20/20" featured "Intoxication Nation," a report on drinking in America.
· ABC's "20/20" was up sharply over its telecast on the same night last year, jumping by 1.7 million viewers, by 46% in Adults 25-54 and by 40% in Adults 18-49 (3.3 million, 1.3/4 and 1.0/3 on 9/23/11).
Saturday
Featuring "Saturday Night Football" (Clemson at Florida State), ABC towered over Fox's college football game coverage in primetime by 61% in Total Viewers (4.5 million vs. 2.8 million) and by 143% in Adults 18-49 (1.7/6 vs. 0.7/3). Airing from 8:06-11:58 p.m., ABC's "Saturday Night Football" dominated "Fox College Football" (Kansas State University at University of Oklahoma from 7:51-11:09 p.m.) by 2.0 million viewers (4.8 million vs. 2.8 million) and more than doubled the Fox game in young adults (+125% - 1.8/6 vs. 0.8/3).
· "Saturday Night Football" was up over the prior week's game by 13% in Adults 18-49 (1.6/5 on 9/15/12).
Sunday
"The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards" (8:00-11:00 p.m.)
ABC's telecast of "The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards" attracted an average audience of 13.3 million viewers and a 3.9 rating, 10 share among Adults 18-49, ranking as the No. 1 entertainment program of the night and pacing behind only NBC's high-rated "Sunday Night Football" NFL game (New England Patriots-Baltimore Ravens).
· "The Emmy Awards" was up year to year by 7% in viewers over its year-ago telecast on Fox (13.3 million vs. 12.4 million on 9/18/11). In addition, the annual awards show surged by 1.0 million viewers from its last telecast on ABC 4 years ago (12.3 million on 9/21/08). In fact, "The 64th Primetime Emmys" outdrew 3 of its last 5 broadcasts.
· One night prior to the start of the 2012-13 TV Season, the "Emmy Awards" offered ABC a broad promotional platform for its fall lineup. ABC research estimates that 31.0 million unique viewers tuned in to at least some portion of the telecast (viewers that watched 6 minutes or more of the show).
· In Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, "The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards" produced ABC's best results with entertainment programming in the 3-hour time period in 7 months - since the "Academy Awards" on 2/26/12.
