Compared to its record-setting premiere episode, last night's second episode of The Americans (2/7/13, 10:00-11:06PM) declined -39% in Total Viewers (1.97 million vs. 3.22 million) and -32% in A18-49 (1.07 million vs. 1.57 million).
That said there were some positive items worth noting for the critically-acclaimed drama.
Last night's episode, "The Clock," posted significant growth from its lead-in half hour (9:30-10:00), the commercial television premiere of the movie Tron: Legacy, increasing +67% in Total Viewers 1.97 million vs. 1.18 million), +73% in A18-49, and +184% in W18-49. Tron: Legacy fell -48% in Total Viewers (1.18 million vs. 2.25 million) and -47% in A18-49 from prior week lead-in movie Knight and Day (618,000 vs. 1.17 million, both Wed. 9:30-10:00PM TP). By comparison, the series premiere posted gains of +43% in Total Viewers and +35% in Adults over lead-in half hour.
The half-hour retention for last night's episode of The Americans was very strong with no decline in A25-54, -3% in Total Viewers, and -4% in both A18-34 and A18-49.
Also of note, the Live+3 percentage increase for the series premiere episode of The Americans set a record for FX with a +49% gain in A18-49 (1.57 million to 2.34 million) and a +44% jump on Total Viewers (3.22 million to 4.63 million). When Live+7 data is available, the series premiere of The Americans will become the most-watched series debut in FX history (Justified, 4.94 million, 3/16/10). If episode two of The Americans follows the trend of our other series, DVR usage will increase in week two which would mitigate the declines from last night's Live+Same Day ratings.
