ABC's "Mistresses" Is Up and Delivers Strong Year-to-Year Improvement

ABC earned second place on Monday in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, while ranking #1 the night in Adults 18-34 and across all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).

ABC's The Bachelorette ranked #1 from 8-10pm, beating NBC's 2-hour season premiere of American Ninja Warrior by 1.4 million viewers and by 6% in Adults 18-49. In addition, the ABC unscripted series was Monday's #1 TV show with Women 18-34 and #2 with Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, behind only CBS' Under the Dome. The Bachelorette grew week to week in Adults 18-34 (+7%) to equal a season high (tying its premiere on 5/27/13).

Building week to week in Total Viewers (+6%) and Adults 18-49 (+9%), ABC's Mistresses beat out NBC's series debut of Siberia in the 10 o'clock hour by 19% in viewers and by 9% in young adults. The new drama was up by double-digit percentages for ABC in the hour year to year with viewers (+14%) and young adults (+20%), improving over original programming on the year-ago night (The Glass House).

ABC earned second place on Monday in Total Viewers (5.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.6/5), while ranking No. 1 on the night in Adults 18-34 (1.3/5-tied) and across all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).

"The Bachelorette" (8:00-10:00 p.m.)

ABC's "The Bachelorette" ranked No. 1 from 8:00-10:00 p.m., beating NBC's 2-hour season premiere of "American Ninja Warrior" by 1.4 million viewers (6.3 million vs. 4.9 million) and by 6% in Adults 18-49 (1.8/6 vs. 1.7/5). In addition, the ABC unscripted series was Monday's No. 1 TV show with Women 18-34 (2.4/8) and No. 2 with Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, behind only CBS' "Under the Dome." "The Bachelorette" grew week to week in Adults 18-34 (+7% - 1.6/6 vs. 1.5/5) to equal a season high (tying its premiere on 5/27/13).

Building week to week in Total Viewers (+6%) and Adults 18-49 (+9%), ABC's "Mistresses" beat out NBC's series debut of "Siberia" in the 10 o'clock hour by 19% in viewers (3.8 million vs. 3.2 million) and by 9% in young adults (1.2/3 vs. 1.1/3). The new drama was up by double-digit percentages for ABC in the hour year to year with viewers (+14%) and young adults (+20%), improving over original programming on the year-ago night (2.8 million and 1.0/3 for "The Glass House" on 7/2/12).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 48% currently, from 45% at the same point in 2012. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
