Week No. 31
ABC won its 2nd straight week in Adults 18-49 (w/o 4/21/14 = 1.5/5), marking its first back-to-back victories during the course of a season (Sept-May) in 4-1/2 years - since the weeks of 11/9/09 and 11/16/09. In fact, the Net has ranked No. 1 on 4 of last 9 weeks in the key young adult sales demo, and on average since the conclusion of the Winter Olympics ABC is the No. 1 TV network (Most Current data for 2/24-4/27/14): ABC (2.3/7), CBS (2.2/7), NBC (2.0/6) and Fox (1.7/5).
Rankings: The Net claimed 7 of the Top 20 TV shows in Adults 18-49: "Modern Family" - No. 3, "Grey's Anatomy" - No. 9, "DWTS" and "Once Upon a Time" tied at No. 11, while "S.H.I.E.L.D.," "The Middle" and "Resurrection" tied at No. 19. ABC's "DWTS" was once again the week's No. 2 TV show in Total Viewers, behind only "NCIS." In fact for the 6th week in a row, "Dancing" was TV's most-watched unscripted series overall and outdelivered both editions of "American Idol" in Adults 18-49. ABC's "20/20" was the No. 1 newsmagazine for the 2nd consecutive week in Adults 18-49.
Monday
For the 2nd week in a row, ABC was Monday's most-watched TV network, beating runner-up NBC by 13% (12.7 million vs. 11.2 million). The Net once again earned 2nd place on the night in Adults 18-49 (2.1/6), outdelivering CBS by 31% (1.6/5) and Fox's all-original drama lineup by 50% (1.4/4). "DWTS" was the night's most-watched TV program overall.
"Dancing with the Stars" (8:00-10:01 p.m. - 14.1 million and 2.2/6 in AD18-49):
From 8:00-10:01 p.m., ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" finished as Monday's most-watched TV series for the 6th week running, outdrawing NBC's "The Voice" in head-to-head competition by 2.9 million viewers (14.1 million vs. 11.2 million). Continuing to close ground with young adults, "Dancing" delivered its most competitive Adult 18-49 finish this season with "The Voice," pulling within 8-tenths of a rating point (vs. a 1.1 rating point difference the prior week). In fact, "Dancing" took 2nd in its 2-hour time slot over CBS and Fox across all key Adults (AD18-34/AD18-49/AD25-54) and Teens 12-17, while tying The Voice in Kids 2-11.
· In addition, "DWTS" was up over the same night last year (13.8 million and 2.1/6 on 4/21/13) in Total Viewers (+2%) and Adults 18-49 (+5%), marking its 4th consecutive week of year-to-year increases on both measures.
"Castle" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 9.8 million and 1.8/5 in AD18-49):
During the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's "Castle" held steady with its last original (on 3/24/14) in Adults 18-49, equaling its best number in almost 3 months - since 2/3/14.
Tuesday
"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (8:00-9:01 p.m. - 6.0 million and 1.9/6 in AD18-49):
During the 8 o'clock hour, ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." took 2nd place in Adults 18-49 (1.9/6) and ranked as the night's No. 1 scripted show (tie), holding steady with its last original telecast in the slot two weeks ago. In addition, the ABC drama was up 11% in Total Viewers over its last original in the hour (6.0 million vs. 5.4 million on 4/8/14), marking its most-watched telecast in nearly 3 months - since 2/4/14.
· "S.H.I.E.L.D." ranked No. 1 in its slot with Men 18-49 (tie) and Men 25-54, while finishing as the top-rated scripted series in its hour in Men 18-34 for its 19th-straight original telecast. The ABC freshman series is Tuesday's No. 1 TV show this season with Men 18-34 and Men 18-49.
· "S.H.I.E.L.D." improved its hour by 73% for ABC year to year in Adults 18-49, from the year-ago night with original programming (1.9/6 vs. 1.1/3 for "Splash" on 4/23/13).
"The Goldbergs" (9:01-9:31 p.m. - 3.1 million and 0.9/3 in AD18-49):
During the 9:00 p.m. half-hour, ABC's repeat "The Goldbergs" beat Fox's repeat "New Girl" by 1.7 million viewers (3.1 million vs. 1.4 million) and by 50% in Adults 18-49 (0.9/3 vs. 0.6/2).
"Trophy Wife" (9:31-10:00 p.m. - 2.2 million and 0.6/2 in AD18-49):
During the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC's repeat "Trophy Wife" attracted a larger audience than Fox's original "The Mindy Project" (+5% - 2.2 million vs. 2.1 million).
"Celebrity Wife Swap" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 3.1 million and 0.9/3 in AD18-49):
Despite having a lower lead-in this week at 10:00 p.m. (last week aired out of an original "S.H.I.E.L.D."), "Celebrity Wife Swap" paced within 1-tenth of its week-ago premiere in the hour with Adults 18-49 (0.9/3 vs. 1.0/3). The ABC unscripted series grew 17% from its premiere in Adults 18-34.
Thursday
With its comedy block returning to all-originals for the first time in 3 weeks (since 4/2/14) and a "Nashville" special, ABC earned 2nd place on Wednesday in Adults 18-49 (1.8/5) and delivered the night's highest-rated TV show with "Modern Family." In fact, ABC's 2-hour comedy block beat "American Idol" by 5% to rank No. 1 from 8:00-10:00 p.m. in Adults 18-49 (2.2/7 vs. 2.1/7) and led by 15% in Adults 18-34 (1.5/6 vs. 1.3/5).
· "Modern Family" was Wednesday's No. 1 TV show for its 6th straight first-run broadcast in Adults 18-49 (3.5/10), outdelivering runner-up CBS' "Survivor" by 52% (2.3/7) and Fox's "American Idol" by a best-ever 67% (2.1/7). Also ranking as the most-watched show overall on the night, the ABC comedy topped "Idol" in Total Viewers for its 3rd consecutive original (+7% - 9.6 million vs. 9.0 million).
"The Middle" (8:00-8:30 p.m. - 7.2 million and 1.9/7 in AD18-49):
At 8:00 p.m. against CBS' "Survivor" and Fox's "Idol," ABC's "The Middle" wins with Adults 18-34 (1.2/5) and key Women: W18-34 (1.7/6) and W18-49 (2.5/8).
"Suburgatory" (8:30-9:00 p.m. - 5.4 million and 1.7/5 in AD18-49):
At 8:30 p.m., "Suburgatory" matched season-best lead-in retention coming out of "The Middle" in Adults 18-49 (89% - 1.7/5 vs. 1.9/7).
"Modern Family" (9:00-9:31 p.m. - 9.6 million and 3.5/10 in AD18-49):
More than doubling its Adult 18-49 lead-in at 9:00 p.m. (+106%), ABC's "Modern Family" dominated its half-hour by 59% over runner-up Fox's "American Idol" (3.5/10 vs. 2.2/6). "Modern Family" was up over its last original in Total Viewers (+7%) and Adults 18-49 (+6%), equaling its 2nd-highest young adult rating since November - since 11/13/13.
"Mixology" (9:31-10:00 p.m. - 4.3 million and 1.5/4 in AD18-49):
In the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC's "Mixology" surged 25% week to week among Adults 18-49 (1.5/4 vs. 1.2/3).
"Nashville: On the Record" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 4.3 million and 1.0/3 in AD18-49):
During the 10 o'clock hour, the "Nashville: On the Record" special made ABC the No. 2 most-watched network in the hour (4.3 million) and beat its CBS and NBC competition with Adults 18-34 and Women 18-34.
Thursday
With an encore of "JKL: Behind the Scandalabra," "Grey's Anatomy" and the debut of "Black Box," ABC finished No. 2 on Thursday in Total Viewers (5.9 million) and won the night in Women 18-34 for the 9th straight week (1.8/6).
"Jimmy Kimmel Live: Behind the Scandalabra" (8:00-9:00 p.m. - 2.8 million and 0.6/2 in AD18-49):
During the 8:00 p.m. hour against all-original competition on CBS ("Big Bang Theory"/"The Millers"), NBC ("Parks & Rec" finale) and Fox ("Hell's Kitchen"), ABC's encore of "JKL: Behind the Scandalabra" drew an average audience of 2.8 million viewers on top of the 4.0 million viewers that tuned into the show's original airing last Thursday (on 4/17/14 at 11:35 p.m.), which was its most-watched-ever late-night telecast during its more than 11-year history.
· From 8:00-9:00 p.m., the replay "JKL" attracted a larger audience than NBC's 1-hour season finale of "Parks & Rec" (2.8 million vs. 2.7 million).
"Grey's Anatomy" (9:00-10:00 p.m. - 8.0 million and 2.3/7 in AD18-49):
Nearly quadrupling its Adult 18-49 lead-in at 9:00 p.m. (+283%), ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" (2.3/7-tied w/ CBS) jumped up to the No. 1 position in its hour, beating Fox with "American Idol" and "Surviving Jack" by 64% (1.4/4) and NBC's "SNL" special by 130% (1.0/3). The ABC drama also won the hour with Adults 18-34 and across all key Women (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54). The ABC drama was Thursday's No. 1 most social broadcast series with 46,979 tweets.
· In its 10th season, "Grey's Anatomy" is up over the same point last year in both Total Viewers (+8%) and Adults 18-49 (+5%), delivering its best results in 4 and 3 years, respectively - since the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
"Black Box" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 6.9 million and 1.5/5 in AD18-49):
In the 10:00 p.m. hour, ABC's "Black Box" nearly tied CBS' "Elementary" for No. 1 among Adults
18-49 (1.5/5 vs. 1.6/5), while leading in Adults 18-34 and across all key Women (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54). In addition, "Black Box" outperformed NBC's week-ago season finale of "Parenthood" (4.0 million and 1.3/4 on 4/17/14) in the same hour by 2.9 million viewers and by 15% in Adults 18-49.
· "Black Box" was up substantially over ABC's most recent debut in the slot, improving over "The Assets" (3.8 million and 0.7/2 on 1/2/14) by 82% Total Viewers and by 114% in Adults 18-49.
· In Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 (tied w/"Betrayal"), "Black Box" is ABC's top 10:00 p.m. drama debut on any night since "Nashville" in October 2012 and its best non-Fall opener since "Scandal" in April 2012 - since 10/10/12 and 4/5/12, respectively.
Friday
ABC won the first Friday of the May Sweep in Adults 18-49, ranking No. 1 on the night for the 4th consecutive week (1.5/5) and finishing as the No. 1 broadcaster in 5 of 6 half-hours of prime. ABC's "Shark Tank" was Friday's No. 1 TV show in Adults 18-49, while "Last Man Standing" and "20/20" tied as the night's No. 2 TV series. "20/20" once again ranked as Friday's No. 1 newsmagazine in key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54).
· The Network was up over the same night last May Sweep by 1.8 million viewers (6.2 million vs. 4.4 million) and by 15% in Adults 18-49 (1.5/5 vs. 1.3/4).
"Last Man Standing" (8:00-8:31 p.m. - 6.1 million and 1.4/6 in AD18-49):
At 8:00 p.m., ABC's season finale of "Last Man Standing" was up 17% in Adults 18-49 to match a 12-week high (since 1/31/14) and won its half-hour for the 4th straight week.
"Shark Tank" (9:00-10:01 p.m. - 7.1 million and 1.8/6 in AD18-49):
Shooting up over its lead-in by 80% at 9:00 p.m. in Adults 18-49 (over a repeat "Last Man Standing"), ABC's "Shark Tank" (1.8/6) dominated its hour, leading CBS' "Hawaii Five-0" by 38% (1.3/4), NBC's "Grimm" by 50% (1.2/4) and Fox's "Kitchen Nightmares" by 50% (1.2/4). "Shark Tank" was up 6% from the prior week among Adults 18-49.
· Growing by double digits year to year in Total Viewers (+14%), Adults 18-49 (+10%) and Adults 18-34 (+13%), "Shark Tank" is delivering its best-ever season with its 3rd consecutive year of young adult gains.
"20/20" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 5.9 million and 1.4/5 in AD18-49):
At 10:00 p.m., ABC's "20/20" ranked as the No. 1 non-sports program in Adults 18-49 (1.4/5-tie), marking its 9th week in a row as the No. 1 regular program in its time period.
· Up season to date in Total Viewers (+21%) and Adults 25-54 (+5%), "20/20" is generating its most-watched season overall in 4 years - since the 2009-10 season.
Sunday
ABC won the first Sunday of the May Sweep in Adults 18-49 (1.8/5), finishing as the No. 1 broadcaster in each hour of the evening. ABC's "Once Upon a Time" stood as Sunday's No. 1 broadcast series in Adults 18-49, while "Once Upon a Time" and "Resurrection" continued to rank as Sunday's Top 2 broadcast dramas.
· ABC was the only broadcaster up from the year-ago May Sweep Sunday in young adults (5.8 million and 1.5/4 on 4/28/13), gaining 17% in Total Viewers and 20% in Adults 18-49. In fact, all 3 of ABC's Sunday dramas improved their time periods year to year in Adults 18-49.
"America's Funniest Home Videos" (7:00-8:00 p.m. - 6.8 million and 1.6/6 in AD18-49):
During the 7 o'clock hour, ABC's "America's Funniest Home Videos" ranked No. 1 in Adults 18-49 (1.6/6). The ABC video clip show was up over its last original in Total Viewers (+15%) and Adults 18-49 (+23%), equaling a season high with young adults.
"Once Upon a Time" (8:00-9:00 p.m. - 7.3 million and 2.2/6 in AD18-49):
Building on its Adult 18-49 lead-in by 38% at 8:00 p.m., ABC's "Once Upon a Time" won its hour by 16% over runner-up CBS' "The Amazing Race" (2.2/6 vs. 1.9/6), beating its regular time-period competition for the 8th week in a row. The ABC drama was once again the No. 1 most social broadcast series on Sunday night with 41,416 tweets, up 20% from the prior week.
· "Once Upon a Time" was up week to week by 24% in Total Viewers and by 29% in Adults 18-49, drawing its biggest audience in 6 weeks and a 3-week high in young adults - since 3/16/14 and 4/6/14, respectively. In addition, the ABC drama was up over its year-ago telecast in Adults 18-49 (+10%).
"Resurrection" (9:00-10:01 p.m. - 7.8 million and 1.9/5 in AD18-49):
Returning after the prior week's pre-emption at 9:00 p.m., ABC's "Resurrection" dominated its regular broadcast competition in the hour for its 7th consecutive telecast in Adults 18-49 (1.9/5), outdelivering Fox's "Cosmos" by 36% (1.4/4), CBS' "The Good Wife" by 46% (1.3/3) and NBC's "Believe" by 90% (1.0/3). The new show was up over its most recent telecast 2 weeks ago in Total Viewers (+4%).
· "Resurrection" improved its hour for ABC from the year-ago night (6.0 million and 1.7/5 on 4/28/13) by 1.8 million viewers and by 12% in Adults 18-49.
"Revenge" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 5.2 million and 1.3/4 in AD18-49):
During the 10:00 p.m. hour, ABC's "Revenge" returned to rank as the No. 1 series in its slot among Adults 18-49 (1.3/4), beating CBS' "The Mentalist" by 8% (1.2/3) and NBC's "Crisis" by 30% (1.0/3).
· "Revenge" boosted its hour over the same night last year by 49% in Total Viewers (5.2 million vs. 3.5 million) and by 86% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/4 vs. 0.7/2).
