UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL ATTRACTS OVER THREE MILLION VIEWERS
Second Most-Watched Final on FOX & FOX Deportes Since 2010
The 2014 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL on FOX on Saturday (5/24), a thrilling encounter between Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, saw Real Madrid score the game-tying goal in the 94th minute to send the match into extra time before tallying three more to win 4-1. According to Nielsen, the match, when combined with the audience generated by FOX Deportes, the nation's leading Spanish language sports network, totaled 3.1 million viewers making it the second most-watched since FOX began televising the prestigious European club competition in 2010, up 48% compared to 2013 (2.1 million). The only UEFA Final to combine for more viewers on both channels is the 2011 edition featuring Barcelona and Manchester United (4.2 million).
The FOX broadcast, called by Gus Johnson and Eric Wynalda live from Lisbon, delivered a 1.1/3 household rating/share with an average audience of 1.9 million viewers, +22% in rating and 36% in audience compared to last year's Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund clash (0.9//2, 1.4 million) also on FOX. The match peaked at 2.2 million viewers from 5:00-5:15 PM ET during extra time.
The addition of younger male viewers drove this year's increases as the rating for the Men 18-34 demographic was up a huge +67% over last year's performance (1.5 vs. 0.9). The UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL on FOX placed third for the weekend among all sporting events in the key male demographic, outpaced only by the NBA Conference Finals, but easily surpassing the NHL Conference Finals. Among broadcast networks, Saturday's UEFA Final tied for third last week among all shows in Men 18-34.
FOX Deportes' coverage of the 2014 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL was the No. 1 Spanish-language sports program for the day with 1.2 million Hispanic viewers. The match was FOX Deportes' third most watched in network history and the highest rated since the 2011 UEFA final. This year's UEFA season was the most watched in the history of the tournament's Spanish-language broadcast.
