"48 Hours: Mommy Dearest" Is Saturday's #1 Program in Viewers for the Second Consecutive Week

"48 HOURS: MOMMY DEAREST" IS SATURDAY'S #1 PROGRAM IN VIEWERS FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE WEEK

48 HOURS: "Mommy Dearest" was Saturday's #1 program with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Oct. 4, 2014. It was the second consecutive week that 48 HOURS was Saturday's top draw with viewers.

At 10:00 PM, 48 HOURS: "Mommy Dearest" was first with viewers, averaging 5.29 million people, and posted a 1.3/04 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news. Compared to the same night last year, 48 HOURS was up +9% in viewers.

Saturday's broadcast featured Richard Schlesinger's report on the role socialite Linda Cooney played in the 1992 shooting death of her ex-husband, Palm Beach lawyer Jim Cooney, and the shooting of her son, Kevin, two decades later with the same gun.

Back in 1992, Cooney shot dead her ex-husband, while Kevin, then 10, peeked through a hole in his bedroom door. The couple had gone through a tough divorce. The case rocked Palm Beach when Linda went on trial for murder and was found not guilty, largely on the weight of Kevin's testimony, investigators say.

Cooney left Palm Beach with Kevin and his brother and landed in Las Vegas. Then in June 2011, she called 911 to report Kevin has been shot in the neck. Kevin Cooney, 30, who once saved his mother from jail, would again be at the heart of a trial against his mother.

Prosecutors maintained Linda Cooney was desperate to control her grown sons - choosing who they dated, who they spoke to, and even living with them in a house with no bedroom doors. Prosecutors believe Linda tried to kill Kevin because he was planning to move out. Cooney's defense paints a different story: Kevin was mentally unstable and on the morning of the shooting, he came after his mother and accidentally shot himself.
