Wednesday's Broadcast Ratings: "Empire" Returns on Top for FOX

Here are the highlights of the 15 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks last night (3/30/16):

FOX (8.686 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 3.0, #1) surged to the top spot on Wednesday with a new "Rosewood" (5.135 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 1.4, #T5) and the return of "Empire" (12.239 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 4.7, #1).

CBS (8.693 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 1.8, #2) then was the number two demo draw with its mix of "Survivor: Kaoh Rong" (9.426 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.1, #2), "Criminal Minds" (9.338 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.8, #3) and "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders" (7.317 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.4, #T5).

Next up was NBC (5.845 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.3, #3) with originals from "Heartbeat" (4.810 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 0.9, #T12), "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (6.032 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 1.4, #T5) and "Chicago PD" (6.693 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 1.5, #4).

Meanwhile, ABC (4.412 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.1, #4) opted for repeats of "The Middle" (5.441 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T9), "The Goldbergs" (4.606 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.2, #T9), "Modern Family" (4.735 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 1.3, #8) and "Black-ish" (3.943 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 1.1, #11) plus a new "Nashville" (3.873 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 0.9, #T12).

And finally, fresh installments of "Arrow" (2.436 million viewers, #14; adults 18-49: 0.9, #T12) and "Supernatural" (1.563 million viewers, #15; adults 18-49: 0.6, #15) on The CW (1.999 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.7, #5) closed out the night.

· In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," 0.9/5; "Late Show," 0.4/2; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.5/3.

· From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline" averaged a 1.2/4 in metered-market households and a 0.4/2 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.

· From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Seth Meyers" (1.3/4 in metered-market households) beat CBS's "Late Late Show" (1.1/4). In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.4/3 in 18-49) topped "Late Late Show" (0.2/2).

· At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.8/3 in metered-market households and a 0.3/2 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.


Here are the highlights of the 13 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks one year ago (4/1/15):

ABC (6.951 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.9, #1) was the demo champ on the first night of April thanks to new episodes of "The Middle" (7.572 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.7, #T5), "The Goldbergs" (7.180 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 1.9, #4), "Modern Family" (9.333 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.9, #1), "Black-ish" (7.401 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 2.4, #2) and "Nashville" (5.110 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 1.3, #9).

FOX (8.366 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 1.7, #2) then claimed the silver with a new two-hour "American Idol" (8.366 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.7, #T5).

Next up was NBC (6.522 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 1.4, #3) and fresh installments from "The Mysteries of Laura" (6.360 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 1.0, #10), "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (6.320 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 1.5, #8) and "Chicago PD" (6.886 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 1.6, #7).

Meanwhile, CBS (7.422 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.3, #4) offered up a new "Survivor: Worlds Apart" (9.470 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.1, #3) and the concluding "The Dovekeepers, Part 2" (6.398 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 0.9, #11).

And finally, new episodes of "Arrow" (2.357 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 0.8, #12) and "Supernatural" (1.741 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 0.6, #13) on The CW (2.049 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.7, #5) closed out the evening. In the netlet's target demo (women 18-34), the former delivered a 0.6 rating while the latter posted a 0.5 rating.
