This season, there’s no rest for the self-reliant men and women who have left modern day life to embrace the enduring traditions that once defined the West. Even the basics—food, heat, and shelter—demand relentless effort from these fiercely independent individuals. But surviving in the wild means constantly forging ahead and going to extraordinary lengths to protect the life they’ve built. This winter brings new traplines, fresh cabin constructions, and ambitious money-making ventures—big dreams and even bigger projects that could either lead to booming success or crushing disappointment.
